Most Kodachrome Like Current Film

What current slide film is most Kodachrome like? Look for that sorta steely blue, popping reds kinda look which is much different from the super saturated vivid green Fuji look.

I shoot mostly black and white so I'm not up on what's up with slide films. I used to shoot Agfa RSX when I need this and it was very similiar but I think this is gone now as well.

My experience is that nothing compares to Kodachrome. Perhaps Fuji Astia gets a bit closer due to the neutrality of its color.

Kodachrome is still with us. Dwayne's Photo in Kansas will process, mount and scan the film.

I agree that nothing really matches Kodachrome, but your question was really "most Kodachrome like". I can't offer an opinion, since I use Kodachrome when I want th at look, and E6 types when I don't really need the look or need the processing done locally.

But I will echo that since it is still available, I encourage its use/support; I'd like to see it around as long as possible. Processing turnaround is the biggest issue, IMO. Oh, and the fact that K25 is gone. Hmmmpf.

I thought it was discontinued for some reason. I must have been thinking of the medium format version.

Although it's twice as much as other film for me, maybe I'll pick some up from B and H along with a mailer for processing.

Here's what I'm doing:

I bought a roll of Kodachrome at Wolf Camera. I sent it to Dwayne's Photo. Dwayne's sells Kodachrome. I bought film from them along with the processing. That lowers shipping cost to $0.25/roll of fresh Kodachrome.

I put two more rolls in the mail today along with 2 rolls of Fuji NPS 220 for processing & scanning.

I used K25 and K64 for about 2 decades then for some reason or another went to colour negative film for a few years. Deciding to return to transperancies a couple of years ago I found here in Australia Kodachrome just wasn't available and the alternatives were basically all Fuji (which the camera mags. continually raved over.) I tried both Velvia 50 and Sensia 100 and ranked them way below the K. products. It sort of symbolised to me what was happenning in the switch to digital, the debate not being about the quality of the finished product but about the convenience. If you can still get Kodachrome in the States just use it.

Actually Walmart will process and mount it ($4.88 tax included for 36 exposures) -- hard to believe, but true -- I use it all the time. They did the attached photo of the Stearman a few weeks ago (Bessa-R, Nikkor-H C 5cm).

I've been sending mine to Dwayne's... Now, David, when you go to Wallyworld, do you leave your Kodachrome rolls in the bin that gets sent out? How do you mark the envelopes? Someone, please, let me know. Thanks! 🙂

I'd bet that Walfart sends the film to Dwayne's but gets a discount for their size. Personally, I'd rather pay Dwayne's a bit more upfront than give Mr. Walton's greedy kids even one copper penny, but YMWV.

No doubt, Wal-Mart is the most economical but the slowest way to get the film to-from Dwayne's. PLUS, you have to find someone at your Wal-Mart who knows what to do with the film. It took me 3 stores to find that person. I also don't know if I can get a CD from Dwayne's going through Wal-Mart.

I'm lazy. I let USPS do all the driving around.

The scans are 3000x2000. Here's one from my first roll since forever.

Wayne: What file format are the scans? On their site it simply says 15MB high res.

JPEG. There seems to be some confusion here. Maybe my fault. The JPEG files on the CD are 3000x2000 and in the range of 5-6 Mb. I don't know why they aren't the 15Mb as stated on the web page. I've called several times & can't get a good explanation. The good news is that they are substantially larger files than your basic minilab scans.

Thanks, Wayne. I'll give them a call before I send them anything. The last time I had E6 & K14 scans done at a local lab, they were awful. The lab manager/owner agreed, and had them redone. They were better, but not "perfect". So, I am thinking I couldn't do much worse with Dwayne's.

Dwayne's is fairly new to scanning (within the last 12-18 months, I think), so I decided not to order scans until I got some good feedback on their work.

I drop the film in the self service mailers at Walmart . I mark them process "K14 color slides". I E6 done there too -- no problem. The more experienced clerks seem to be aware of color slide users like myself when they dig out the processed film envelopes and give them to me at the counter. The service is better than the local "serious" camera store Sammy's Camera and about three times cheaper.

Walmart also says they can process 120, black and white, and (remarkably) Super 8 and 16mm movie film. My understanding is that they send it to Rocky Mountain Film Lab in Colorado. You can go to Rocky Mountain directly, but they charge more than twice as much plus postage.

I like Walmart. Show me a "Mom and Pop" store that can do better.
