Sent four lenses off for adjustment and coding today, summicrons and a summilux. Handing those boxes to the post office guy was wrenching, like I was all but taking the lenses and just smashing them on the pavement. I will be on pins and needles until I hear they were signed for in New Jersey, and then on more pins and needles until they get back.
Don't know how I'm going to survive until then.

turn on the TV and have a couple of beers. That'll take the edge off. For a while.

Beer will be key to the next few weeks, I think.
And by "weeks" I mean "years", of course.

Insure them to full value, buy tracking, use Priority Mail, and pack them encased in bubble wrap and there's no need to worry - not lost one yet

Yeah, did that, pretty much. Wrapped in foam sheets, packed tightly in foam peanuts. Had the four lenses in three separate packages, too: I just couldn't cope with the idea of all those eggs in one smashable basket.
Thanks. Only folks here might understand.

Curious why you didn't use a courier (e.g. FEDEX). I feel much better with them, and in Canada, the mail service is threatening to go on strike.

Always a stressful moment... but if you packed them well you don't have too much to worry about. Anyway, they're on their way to be adjusted, so if they jostled a little, it'll get sorted out on the other end. Good luck!!!

You will be OK. I never send my lens Priiority mail. Express Mail is more expensive, but it is tracked every step of the way. The USPS miss shipped two of my lens in the same box I sent in for CLA to the wrong Zip code. They could not tell me where they were, as they only scan the whole shipping crate the items are in with Priority mail. Express mail each package is scanned at each sort facility.
It was the longest 10days of my life waiting to find they were OK. I have only had this happin once. I takes a long time to forget. You will be fine.
I do drink lots more now & have taken up smoking good cigars. Don't worry

I just haven't seen improved service from the couriers over what the post office provides, at 1/4 the price of the couriers. I've had an especially terrible time with UPS: if you ever sign the note telling them it's ok to leave a package, they apparently take that as carte blanche to forevermore leave packages without signatures.
I would have had this anxiety with any shipper, really.

Whenever I ship gear, I wrap it in a ton of bubble wrap, and airbags, and fill the rest of the box with packing peanuts. I reckon that stuff could survive a fall from a 10th story unharmedBeer will be key to the next few weeks, I think.

I think the safest way is USPS Registered mail. Jewelry is sent this way. I've had people send me irreplaceable bamboo fly fishing rods this way and on the various fly fishing forums, this is what is agreed the best way to send irreplaceable valuables. It is not that expensive and I would definitely do that with Leica but fortunately, I live only about an hour away. I've also dropped Hasselblads for repair in person since they are in Jersey as well.

I would never ship anything via UPS. Everything that comes my way by them is smashed, like they just toss the boxes in the trailers, and then jump on them to make more space. And if it has a built in handle, you can guarantee the box will be ripped open.
