I feel rather silly asking this, but I haven't figured out how to mount a J-12 onto a Kiev 4. Can anyone please enlighten me? Thanks in advance ! Ming

1. Set the camera to infinity and block it.
2. Dismout old lenses
3. There is a red dot on a camera, the same red dot is on your J-12. Both of them should be in a same place. Fit the lens onto the outer bayonet ring so that the red dot on the lens ring is aligned with the red dot on the camera front cover.
4. Mount the lens. Turn the lens anticlockwise till a click is heard, the sound of the sprung catch on the outer ring of the lens mount dropping into place.
5. To test if it's mounted properly try to use a focusing ring on your j-12. If it is working on its full scale the lens are mounted properly. If it is working only on some part of its focusing scale - its mounted not properly.

Also, don't use the little focusing wheel with the J-12; it might damage the focusing mechanism. The little wheel is for 50mm lenses on the internal bayonet only.

Dear Bill,

I'd add,

"and while you're focusing with the lens barrel, keep your finger off the focusing wheel, which will otherwise whizz round and saw it up a treat."

Cheers,

Anonther interesting take on this (and I know the official, correct way is to set the lens and mount to infinity) is to start with the focussing scale set to 3 metres. (See: http://www.sdash.plus.com/page5.htm) At first this sounds daft but if you've ever taken a Jupiter 12 (or other outer bayonet lens) off a Kiev/Contax, you'll notice that if the lens was set to infinity, the focussing scale on the camera will be at 3 metres when the lens comes off. Putting the lens on with the scale set at 3 metres almost invariably seems to ensure that the lens/body coupling is correct!

Mind you, having said that, I still use the infinity settings and rotate the focussing ring backwards and forwards until the coupling is correct and the lens will focus from one end of the scale to the other...

That's the truth! Sadly, I'm thinking about getting rid of all of my Kiev gear ... I've got more cameras than I can really use, and the Kievs don't get out much anymore.

I have alo some Problem ,ounting a black J 12 from the late seventies on a Kiev from the 60's it's a rather tiresome operation. maybe the tolerances changed. Never tried an older silver one.

I have a J12which is difficult to mount-period! Lining up the red dots and releasing the infinity lock and slowly twisting it on seems to work-its not rocket science but close to it!
