Mounting J12 on Kiev 4a question..

I just received a 1983 vintage J12 in the Kiev Mount.

Before I went to mount the lens, I set both the camera and lens on INF.

When I mounted the lens, I had to move the pin on the camera UP to allow the rear mount to drop down so it would seat properly.

The RF apears to to be accurate when I pace off a meter. And the longer distnace's seems OK too.

Is this normal for mounting a J12 ??

The proper way to mount a J-12 is to set focus on the body and lens to infinity then mount the lens. Next turn the focus ring on the lens till you hear the lock drop in.

OK, Did that, and when I turned the focus to the closed distance, I heard a click.

But I still had move the spring loaded pin on the camera up a tad to allow the rear mount to seat itself. (the pin between the Camera flange and RF window).

anything else I need to know ??

That's normal.. You can press the lever just behind the focus wheel to move the pin..

From memory there are some good threads here on RFF talking about this problem... some J-12's are just a pain, but I haven't had that experience. It sounds like you have it sorted now... A site that really helped me out when I thought I had no chance of mounting my J-12 can be found here (click)

What you described seems nomal to me. I have found that lenses mount different from camera to camera

There are two problems with the infinity lock:

The lens fails to push enough to allow the camera to come off infinity as the lens is mounted. Use left hand thumb on wheel latch.

After the lens is mounted the infinity lock can latch back again if you focus to infinity, it is not supposed to latch back again.

Alas there may be a third problem in that few J12 are free enough when mounted on a camera to allow the focus wheel to turn freely, the focus wheel is allowable on short focus lenses but rarely possible with J12. I never use the wheel so it does not annoy me but the relatching at infinity does do since I dont always keep my finger on the wheel.

Thanks for info links. Seems like I have a common Lens, I'll be taking some pics in this next week. I'll post some in my RFF gallery after I have HIgh Res files made from local photo store (2400x3600 respectivily)
