Mounting M lenses to a GF1

Just bought my daughter a GF1 for her birthday and it works fine with the stock 20mm, however when we mount an M lens via the Panasonic adaptor we're getting a "PLEASE CHECK THAT THE LENS IS MOUNTED CORRECTLY" error-message.

I'm digitally challenge please help

No problem, in the menue check the point "allow shutter release without lens" or something like that.
Sorry, I have it in german only...
Regards, Tmas

This is why the Leica X1 concept is superior in terms of how the camera is layed out. I would like these Japanse designers to get it through their thick heads why shutter speed dials and simple limited meneus actually speed up
the use of a camera. They need to learn all over again from the Germans the way they did in the first half of the 20th Century. German effecency are words that ring true here!!!

you should set your camera to "C1" or "C2" on the dial on the top of the camera; then go to the menu and setup (as mentioned, under the wrench icon). Put the setting to "shoot without lens". This will save the setting everytime you click the dial to C1 (custom 1). When your daughter wants a regular p&s, switch it back to P. And anytime you want to play with M lenses, switch back to C1 (or C2).

PS--Since you're trying out an M lens, with the latest firmware (your cam might already have latest firmware) you can zoom in digitally to assist in focus by pressing the selection wheel with your thumb.

I don't know of any practical limitation to just leaving the menu setting to "shoot w/out lens", since the AF Lumix lenses seem to function normally regardless of the setting's value. Which begs the question of why this inscrutable function was included in the menu in the first place.

Perhaps its purpose was merely to discourage the use of third party lenses via adaptors, since they knew the typical occidental consumer would be overwhelmed by all the menus anyway. ;)

Yes, perfectly true, you don't need to change back and forth between 'Shoot w/out lens', just leave it set on that.

I'd guess though that the menu item appears so inexperienced users can't shot without the kit lens being properly seated on the mount and communicating with the camera. In which case they'd get the LCD warning to attach it properly. Clearly the designers of this menu feature aren't so lofty as to be unable to relate to 'normal' people.

This is one of those invaluable threads that make one wonder what life without RFF would be like. When I got my GF1 set up with Metabones aadapter and CV25 and the "PLEASE CHECK THAT THE LENS IS MOUNTED CORRECTLY" message popped up when I pressed the shutter I thought I'd either broken something or bought a lemon.

I was ready to make the 130 mile round trip to ffordes at Beauly to get advice and try out other adapters, but once again RFF has the answer!

Thanks guys!!!

It is unfortunate that the thick manual is full of words, and yet is so poorly ordered that you cannot find anything right away; you have to dig, re-dig...and then, somewhere in there, there's that one sentence buried that hints at an answer.

I found the manual very unhelpful. It is helpful if you don't know a thing about cameras, but if you're not a novice user, it is just a waste of time.

By deduction I figured out that 4:3 actually uses the whole sensor (pointless, though, when shooting RAW...and yet they don't mention that; thank g@wd I knew that) versus the misleading crops they have in the manual.

It took me a few minutes to figure out that "Allow Shutter Release Without Lens", after digging through each menu, was what I was looking for (the sales rep almost had a heart attack, too, until I found that setting).

There are still a bunch of things about the camera that don't make sense and nowhere (and I mean nowhere) in the manual they're addressed.

Like: why is the little wheel with the arrow showing up once I press the shutter button half-way after reviewing the photos? And only then does it show up. Or why does the EV compensation move in Aperture Priority when I move the wheel, instead of the aperture settings? Why can't you get to it easily via the Quick Menu? Why can't you get to it at all via the main Menu? Why does turning off the Display not take hold once you start shooting again?

Love the little camera's images, and the 20mm f/1.7 lens, but the menu design shows the many afterthoughts and big-wig committee "ooh ooh I know what I'd like to see in there and I don't care what your objections are because I sign your checks..."

OK, end of rant.

Or why does the EV compensation move in Aperture Priority when I move the wheel, instead of the aperture settings?

I have a G1 and GH2 but they probably work the same:

When you're in Aperture priority, the adjustment wheel can control EV compensation or Aperture. Pressing the wheel into the body will toggle it between the two functions. The currently active function will be coloured yellow on your screen.
