mounting Zorki 1 onto a tripod

G'day
I am getting a tripod-mount wrist strap http://www.electricedge.com/gordy_s_straps/store/wrist-tripod/index.htm for my Zorki 1. I notice the tripod "socket" is too large for my tripod. Does anyone know what the size is?

I notice Gordy has a 3/8 tripod reducer bushing 3/8. Would that work? Or would you have other suggestions? Thank you.

There are broadly only two sizes: 1/4 inch and 3/8 inch. Adapters are readily available. I habitually carry one on my key-chain in case I need it.

('Broadly' because there are a few very old cameras, all wooden as far as I know, that have neither 1/4 nor 3/8. But 1/4 and 3/8 are safe bets).

Historically, since the late 19th century, 3/8 inch is the agreed international standard but the British and Americans tended to ignore this even in the 1930s and 1/4 inch is now the de facto standard.

The Zorki 1 is definitely a 3/8" socket and a 3/8-1/4" adaptor will work fine.

That adapter must be awfully thin, since the difference between 1/4 and 3/8 is only 1/8. I assume it screws into the tripod socket or onto the tripod bushing, meaning it is threaded. Quite a feat.

I'm planning to make DIY wrist strap but I'm trying to find out proper screw. So far this page has helped a lot but in case I buy proper one I should know perfectly what I need so is the right one 3/8"-16 UNC? If I find wrist strap useful is it going to fit into FED 2 or is it 1/4"-20 UNC?

In case some of you have made your own please share good tips. I'm not sure how to couple screw and the leather together without it looking like a cheap lump.

Hi,

The threads were/are 1/4" Whitworth and 3/8" Whitworth and your best chance of finding one is a garage as Whitworth went on being used on cars' exhausts systems for a long, long time after everything else was metric.

I didn't realize these were originally BSW threads. Interesting. I understand the LSM standard is actually a Whitworth size as well, and not precisely a metric thread pitch, resulting in some marginally compatible lenses.

In the case of the tripod thread though, the difference between 55 degree Whitworth and 60 degree SAE threads is not really significant, so any old 1/4 x 20 bolt should do the trick.

I have more experience with "Britworth" fasteners than I would hope for with my old Triumph motorcycles.

Here, on the Fedka website, is a picture of the required bushing and how it fastens onto the camera. I have one of these I got off eBay to adapt the 3/8" tripod socket on my FED-2 onto a standard 1/4" tripod mount:
