My 83 year old neighbor has a M6, I am thinking of buying it. What does it entail to get an MP style finder on it? Who can do it? How much would it cost? I suppose there is an outside chance it has it. How would I know?

Send an email to Steve's camera in San Diego. That's where mine was done. Great customer service.

Roland.

You mean you're thinking of upgrading the RF patch to eliminate the occasional white-out? That upgrade does not entail installing an MP finder, but merely a masking device. I think installing an MP system would cost more than the camera, but I admit I could be wrong.

As for the cost of the masking device, Gerry Smith at Kindermann gave me an estimate (not a quote!) of approximately $160 to $180.

They call it the "Flare free Optic " upgrade ;DAG charges $165.00 if done at the same time as a CLA .... plus the shipping both ways ....

do you mean the "flare fix" or the whole mp rangefinder assembly? the latter costs $600-700 and you have to send it in to leica.

You don't have to change the whole finder. It amounts to installing a condenser lens. DAG upgraded my pre-TTL M6 during a CLA. Also had the winding lever changed to the solid MP style. It's functionally as good as my .72 MP--though not as smooth in the film advance.

It's a good idea to wait till you need a CLA and do a finder upgrade at the same time. You don't have to pay for the extra labor this way.
I am still waiting for my M4p to fail but it is running smoother and smoother. Such a letdown :D

Why upgrade the finder until you have experience with that particular camera?
It may be that it works just fine for you.
I have an M6 Classic 0.85 and yes it does flare at time but the camera works just fine so until I need a CLA, I use as is.
Both my M7's developed problems with the mechanical ASA reader so both went to Solms for the upgrade and while there I had both finders upgraded but I can't notice any difference anyway.
BTW Leica did a particularly nice job on both and actually CLA'd each as well as recovered one where the covering was not quite flush with the bottom, something that never bothered me anyway. The one under warrenty was no charge for anything, the one not under warrenty was just a charge for the finder upgrade. -Dick

i called leica nj a little while ago. $1400 will get you the entire rangefinder assembly on its own, but it's only $600-700 to exchange it for a new one.
