MP viewfinder

Oh, hrmm. Do you or anyone know of a good external VF for 35 which give decent eye relief?

I found this link a while ago.

It looks interesting and very glasses friendly, but I think I remember reading somewhere that in theory it would work well but that when put together things were loose and didn't feel very solid. Which.. I mean it is a frankensteined VF and while thinking about it and working on it I imagine with some glue and taking your time to assemble it you could probably make it to where parts don't move around and stuff.

Not the case. The optics fit into slots that mimic the same design of the slots used in the donor camera, and they don't move once installed. No glue necessary! The parts just fit together.

It's actually quite a good viewfinder, and only 1/2 ounce.

So I ended up getting my friends SBLOO finder and I must say, it works perfectly for me. I can see the frame lines without issue with my glasses on and I threw some gaffers tape on it to not scratch my glasses even more than they already are. Thanks for all the replies and info.

Excellent! you may be able to find an off-the-shelf adhesive ring that would serve the purpose of the gaffer tape and look better. 🙂

Very interesting and timely...I'm working with a 6x9 folder with a 105mm lens and would like a shoe mounted viewfinder but while looking I find most are expensive...pulling one out of the Canon camera and placing it in that plastic mount looks doable...
I really don't know how to frame with the viewfinder it currently has and while testing I find I'm all over the place in framing...this would help...plus I wear glasses too...

There is a lot of interchangeability with Leica M film camera parts (besides the M5 for obvious reasons) and modern finders do indeed fit in the older film M cameras. RFFer simonsawsunlight has two Leica M2s that now have modern MP finders in them installed by Leica. They're both 0.72 finders but could have easily been 0.58 finders if Simon chose to go that way. But that's an expensive route to go down. Would be cheaper to sell the current camera and buy a camera with a 0.58 finder already in it.

correct, but it's an m2 and an m4 that have gotten the MA finder installed. the problem seems to be that, unless you have an organ donor you pretty much have to have it done by leica, since they won't sell the finder parts to third parties. go figure.

Did you have problems with the original M2 and M4 finders? What is the advantage of an M-A finder?

Erik.

The M4 was blacked out after an unfortunate meeting of camera and concrete. The M2 finder was deteriorating and I therefore had it replaced before it broke down entirely.

The M-A finder is just their current (non-metered) finder version, with framelines for 28, 35, 50, 75, 90 and 135mm. There was no choice of finders (other than magnification). They don't have the old M2/M4 finders in stock at Leica, otherwise I would have been fine with a simple replacement.

I still have an M2 with the old finder and other than the different (and a bit wider) framlines and it not being quite as fresh, I don't see much significant difference.

If you can’t see the framelines then it almost ruins the entire rangefinder experience in my humble opinion.

I know this might sound blasphemous to a 35 shooter, but have you ever tried a 50? If you get one that focuses down to .7 it might suit you better. Just throwing another solution out there that’s cheaper than getting a .58 finder

Even the M5 finder must have some interchangeability. When I had one previously the 35 frame line drove me nuts, so when I bought an M5 in need of service I had an M4 style 35 frame installed as it was being worked on.

Still doesn't help the OP, but thought I'd mention it anyway. I still think you do just get used to the 35 frame lines over time.
