MP or MP3?????????
MP or MP3?????????
I broke down when I saw the black MP3 - everything a Leica should be - with that M3 look - I can't say enough how much I like using it - you will LOVE it! GET ONE --- the truth is - You really only get to live once!

I got a chrome MP 3 body and I love it. Then again I love the look of the original M3and MP so for the price I got the looks of an M3 with a meter and a passport warranty.
"Also, it has an M2 style film counter, which needs to be manually reset each time to you load a new roll if you want to..."
This is only a half-truth. Yes, you can choose to manually set your film counter but in actual operation the film counter resets itself as you rewind the previous roll of film. So you could tare the counter, insert a roll, shoot it up, rewind the roll and the counter will be back to where you set it.

I had Leica UK to replace the standard MP covering with the "vulcanite" version and had the 75/135 frame lines removed. For me the "sharkskin" covering certainly was slippery when wet....
I made the changes for practical reasons when working, not based on aesthetics or cost for that matter. I just wanted a tool that fitted my requirements.

Simon,
How does the new "Vulcanite" compare to the original?

To be honest Ron when i compare with my M4 and M4-2 i don't really notice or "feel" any difference they are very similar A vast improvement on the standard covering and that of my M6 but if my palms were dry most of the time maybe i'd feel somewhat different as i'd have more tactile sensitivity - so much for choosing to live in hot and humid climates

prior to owning my MP3, I have bought (and sold) 3 ordinary MP, strictly from my personal experience, MP3 feels of tighter mechanical tolerence, it gives a more precise feel each time you turn the advance level and when you press the shutter release. the difference is there, it brings it closer to the feel of a M3. by the way, less is more. if you understand it, you understand it, if you don't, you don't.

Both are beautiful cameras. I traded my MP (Black paint) for an MP3 (silver), just like the even more retro feel and the matching Summilux.
Framelines ,as already said, are 35/50/90 but 28 does work well as being the whole viewfinder. I think the viewfinder screws into the body differently to the standard MP, looks more like an M6.
If you look for a case then you will need a Luigi custom as standard Leica case does not fit the teardrop lugs.

I have a black M6 .85 pre-ttl and a silver MP .72. Ever since I bought the MP this is the only camera that I use on a daily basis. I love the retro feel, along with the modern technology that went into this camera.
As far as the viewfinders are concerned, I like them both, but since I bought the MP used, I did not have a choice, and probably would have opted for the .85 if I this were an option.
With all that being said, and after viewing a few MP3 lately, this will be my next pruchase, hopefully within the next three years. So, if this does not confuse you even more then, I don't know what will.
I think if you like the retro look and you are not to concerned about some of the modern conveinences in the MP, then I think you might be happier with the MP3.
Either way you cannot go wrong! You'll love them both!
Good Luck!

I just sent out the check for the black paint MP 3 kit w/ 50 ASPH / LHSA & Leicavit that was on here a few days ago.
I get it Wednesday, I will take lots of beauty shots of it and post them
I have to sell an M6TTL and my other 50 ASPH now...
