FYI, I took a plunge and ordered 50 6x9 prints from Mpix.com on their basic Kodak paper. I don't own a printer and decided that for now I'd just scan my negs at home, then get some prints every six months or so.

WOW. They look AMAZING. They also look identical to what's on my monitor--a Dell fpw2005 (S-IPS) that I "calibrated" by eyeballing. The prints came very quickly, were well protected by cardboard and wax paper envelopes, and are very precisely the dimensions of my files, with no extra cropping.

Given the speed and convenience of this service, my limited space, and my lack of desire to have a new expensive piece of technology to keep running, I think I'm going to stick with doing it this way. Highly recommended.

They are good, but expensive, especially when you get to large size prints. I finally bought an Epson R1800 and a HiTouch 4x6 dye sub printer. They're even better and I can print on demand. But I understand the desire to avoid managing more hi tech gear.
