Multiple scans for HDR using qtpfsgui?

It's a sadly-named but great little program for playing with HDR manipulation, trial and error tone mapping.
Since qtpfsgui does not allow for correcting mis-alignments, it seems like it would be ideal for use with film and scanners, combining scans with varying analog gains to produce HDR files.
Has anyone here played with it? Or any other tone mapping fun?

I can understand the need for hdr with 12bit files from a dSLR, but a decent scanner should be capable of getting enough dynamic range out of a negative.

Vuescan does multipass scanning which should get out at least 10 stops.
