Museum Piece?

I was out shooting the other day when a woman came up to me, pointed at the M4 hanging around my neck, and said, "wow, that looks like it came out of a museum!" What's the best reaction you've ever had to your RF gear?

In a slightly different vein (but one that I am sure will appeal to a lot of you here): My main tripod is one of the old aluminium Marchioni Tiltalls. A number of years ago (back when I was solely an SLR shooter) I was out shooting with my EOS 1n and 70-210/2.8. An older man walked past me and very quietly said, "nice tripod."

I shoot mostly a Bessa R and Rollei Automat and my son (3 yr old) asks constantly if he can see the picture. I keep having to tell him it isn't like Mommy's camera, I have to develop the film.

About a month ago I was shooting on a Saturday night in downtown Asheville. I barely got a glimpse of a man (probably in mid-twenties) who walked past me and said, "Nice Leica." He kept walking and I kept shooting. It was the first time I have had anyting like that happen.

I was shooting with my M2 at the Pike Place Market when a man and his wife stopped dead in their tracks. Eyes wide and grinning ear-to-ear the man said, in a thick south american accent, "You and I must be the only M2 shooters left. I bought mine in 1985". He shook my hand and walked on.

It was actually a very pleasent encounter.

I use that new digital film from Walmart. You you take in the roll of film and get back CD with pictures on it.

When I was visiting home, my dad saw my M6+'Cron 50 laying around the house and said "oh is that the crappy camera you bought on the internet?" Not wanting to tell him how much I actually spent, I said "yeah, it's an old camera"

My Kiev 4 used to get interest from stangers on the street in Hong Kong. I took a Leica IIIf + collapsible Summitar to Carmel once and that turned a few heads -- that's the sort of upscale crowd that understands these things.

I had a similar experience a few weeks ago. I was out shooting with my M5, and a cyclist approaching took a very close look at me and the camera. As he went past, he softly called out "Hey, wanker!" Later I thought, maybe he actually said "Hey, Leica!". My hearing's not too good on that side. 😱

I've been using one of these since 1985. I couldn't stand the pan-tilt head and got a ball head. It is my only tripod and it has taken some abuse but keeps holding up. 😀

I was watching the ice skaters at Lasker Rink at the north end of Central Park last winter when two local teenagers skated up to me and pointed at my old m5 around my neck, said hey, does that thing work? I bet it doesn't even use batteries! When I told them it was from 1971 and used film, they looked at me as if I said 1871.
After I took a couple of photos of them they skated away laughing and said, man, your crazy for still using film. As I walked home I said to myself, yup, you're right, I am crazy..
