Once in a certain swriling and heated rally, amidst the crowd of dslr shooting reporters I spotted another film shooter, wielding an Alpa with flashbulb gun. For a second, we stared at each other in disbelief.

Anyway, usually I've got pleasant reactions when I shoot with my Leica III, which is actually a museum piece, from "oh a Leica" to "that's a lovely camera young man". I've had also a bunch of "Is that digital?" or its variation "It's not a digital, right?". NOPE :bang:
Lately, a guy, who turned out to be a political refugee from Romania at the time of Caucescu, stopped me: "it's a Leica, not Zorki ... I used to shoot with a Zorki" and went on asking me if I were a professional photographer. I answered no but I thought that he surely remained in the time when he escaped from Romania ... which professional photographer shoots with a Leica III now? 🙄
Last story among many others: I was strolling around with my M2 around the neck when I heard: "I've got the same". I stopped and looked at the guy who talked, and he added with arrogance: "well, mine is black ... in fact, it's a M7 with the latest 'cron". I hesitated between a "good for you" and "f*** off" 😀

Walked past this guy about 50 sitting at a park bench.
'Hey a film camera' he says he had a Canon 35mm SLR on a neck strap 'I will have to tell the kids they wont believe me!'
'Its a Kiev.' I say, 'I can see that' he says.

Yesterday I was out in the shop at work photographing some new equipment nearing completion. I pulled out my Weston Master V to get a reading.
One of the guys in the shop asked, "What the heck is that?"

These are certainly interesting anecdotes. Shows how naive some people can be. In cases in which somebody actually recognized the camera (that Kiev might have said so in Cyrillic), you might have a knowlegeable person around.
As for Carmel being an "upscale" crowd, that figures, but the same could be said for southern California's version, Laguna Beach, or for some others - San Rafael, or Santa Barbara, where they recognize ANYTHING expensive.

Oddest one I had was on my son-in-law's birthday we went to see the Blue Man Group in London's West End. It's a mime show with large men painted blue (in case you wondered about the name) and at the end of the show as the audience were leaving the Blue Men were in the foyer to be photographed with their public, all without saying a word. Until I took out the M2 and pointed it at him for the photo, when to my amazement he went straight out of character and talked to me about the camera, which Leica was it what film did I have in it (HP5+) could you get them in London, etc. All with a man a foot taller than me painted bright blue, very surreal

I had the owner of stables where my daughter takes riding lessons do a double take and say "I can't believe you're risking a camera like that bringing it to a barn!"

A few weeks ago I was shooting with my L/M CL and Rokkor 40, and a youngish guy (late 30s/early 40s) with his child said to me "Is that a CL?" Yes "Do you have the 90?" Yes "Sweet camera!" I was too dumbstruck to ask him whether he had one, etc.

After I shot a few pics of a 50ish woman the other day, she asked "Can I see?" She was visibly disappointed that she couldn't.

Well...a bit off topic, but back in the late 80's I was shooting a wedding with a Rolleiflex 2.8F 12/24 2.8 Zeiss planar. I was seting up a 'table shot' when one of the elderly guests said: "Wow, my grandfather had one of those" I replied: "So did mine".
Then a few hours later, the father of the bride asked me why I was using "that antique" to photograph his daughter's wedding". I replied: "Because this antique will provide the sort of quality and lasting memories that you are paying so dearly for".
