I just got back from seeing the Winogrand show at the Nat'l. Gallery of Art in D.C. and must advise anyone in the general area who hasn't already gone to go! It's a massive show with almost 1/3 never-before-published works along with images which made their debut in the MoMA show in '88. One of the treats is looking over his contact sheets on display, although his later work shows weakness and is noted in the show.

Enjoy!

The Winogrand show has just landed in New York at the Metropolitan Museum. Definately a must see. All of the rooms in the photo area on the 2nd floor were used, with other pix on the walls outside. As above, interesting stuff in the display cases in the middle of several rooms including some contact sheets. Nicely done!

I went to see the Winogrand retrospective at the Met last weekend and came away slightly let down.
My take, YMMV: The never-before-seen prints were, with a couple of exceptions, not up to his earlier work.

A few years ago I saw a larger Winogrand exhibition at the Smithsonian, with about double the number of prints that were on display at the Met, and was blown away. Not this time. Perhaps I've seen his work so many times that it has lost its visual impact?

A nice touch, however, was having a close look at some of his contact sheets.

I'd be interested in the opinion of other RFF members.
