I was in Samy's this afternoon to drop off some film and pick up a filter, and this tall German guy with a heavy accent manned the Leica booth there, and they had the M8 out to play with. What an amazing piece of work. It's definitely lighter than the M7 and MP, but not as light as the ZI -- it feels just right. Although the same size, it feels a bit more.. girthy.

The shutter noise.. sounds terrible compared to the MP/M7 when you hold the camera up to your eye, has a bit of an electronic zinge to it. However, at arms length and further, i.e. as if someone else were using it to take a picture, it sounds like a faint shutter with someone immediatley cocking it, quieter than my eos 300D (which is quiet). So ultimatley, not bad at all.

The pictures looked over saturated on the LCD, and I was not used to the ISO layout. I like the little wheel around the arrow buttons to zoom in and out of the iamges (which by the way, looked very soft -- possibly due to the abused 50 1.4 on the camera -- there also appeared to be significant chromatic aberration around white piece of paper stuck to the orange shelves when shot wide open at 1.4).

That was fun. At at the end of the day.. not 100% convinced with the M8 just yet. I'm going to try to keep myself from picking this up until next year. And I kinda want the MP now.

My god. Imagine all the first class overseas tickets I could get and spend a wonderful vacation *whimper*

Oh, by the way, their price quoted was something like $4,700. It may be possible to pick it up on a no-tax day, too.

And it was a slower camera to use -- it's not an fps machine like the canons and nikons.

Oh oh.. and next to it they had the R9 + DMR. Holy cow that thing is HUGE!

I know where I'm going after work!

I thought about getting a Leica there on a previous no tax day but they usually exclude the higher priced cameras like the 5D, 1 series, and unfortunately, Leicas.
