My 4 month old M7 broke! Help!

The advance lever stuck - cant snap a shot or wind the film. Took out the film, put in a new roll and same thing. Cant shoot or advance.
I bought it NEW 4 months ago and registered it with Leica so its under warranty. I can not seem to find a phone# to call Leica so I can send it in. Im in the USA and have the address to send it to, but would lik eto call them 1st. Does anyone have the # to Leica in Northvale, NJ?

OR does anyone have a solution for the frozen film advance lever? Maybe its something I am overlooking??

ack, double post.

a scrap of film probably got into the gears and jammed it up. a common though expensive problem. just google "jammed leica". some leica repairmen will take care of it for free, others will charge $300.

Actually they changed ther address so I have the new info. Im sending it off to them tomorrow. SInce I have an assignment due in 4 weeks (have to shoot 22 rolls for it) my wife (so kind) told me I could order a new MP if I want. BUT I don't think I will. Can't stand thinking I paid full price for the M7 and it just broke after 4 months. Yea, they will fix it but why did it break so easily?

Anyway, I may get the MP and Ill have it while I wait for my M7 to be fixed, BUT the M8 is almost here..and no way she would let me get that one as well if I take the MP!
 
Why buy the MP when there are several nice looking used M6 and M6TTLs in the RFF classifieds? Buy a used M6/TTL for your project and then sell it for the same price if/when you can justify the M8.

I have had something similar ahppen to me with the MP but I think they have completely different mechanics controlling the shutter. The first and second curtains jumble up against each other and get stuck in the track. I just moved them (GENTLY) back and forth on the track while working the advance lever (GENTLY). It frees up after playing with for a little while. Maybe doing that 10 or 20 times. It has not put my camera into the broke category.

You guys are scaring me, new MPs and M7s should not be doing that ... 🙁

I think I'll stick to my M6.

As an OT comment... it's interesting to see the kind of comments this query elicited in PN...

Now, Steve, call Leica to their toll-free number and find out their current address because I can't recall whether the one above is correct or not. And ship it to them the fastest possible way, so they can start working on it right away. You'll have to wait for their estimate to come in the mail, though, before you plea your case to them (that you need the camera pretty much soon).

As for getting a "spare"... I'd go for the M6TTL or any M6. If your assignment comes and the M7 is still in the shop, any of these will do. You can always sell it later and not lose money on it.

And, again, good luck! 🙂 Despite all the horror stories you may have heard, they also can be pretty helpful over there at Leica NJ.
 
Just a thought, did the lever jam on loading a new film, or half way through. When I got mine I guess I slightly miss loaded it (loading in a hurry) and the lever jammed, I just took out that film, noticed the leader had a small cut in it, I trimmed a new leader and reloaded, all was fine.

Have you tried moving the rewind lever then wiggle the sprockets back a tad the winding on without film loaded.

Remember next to nothing is 100% perfect for 100% of the production run. It matters not if its a Leica, ZI, CV or FSU. Faulty kit is a real PITA though. Hope it gets sorted quickly. Good luck.

Years ago when I sold Leica (among other brands of course) to save money to put myself through university, I always was stunned at the amount of Leica stuff the came back under warranty given its price and can certainly appreciate the concern that you mention and saw that look on many a cusomers face. BUT what I did learn in the end is that with hand made stuff like this its usually the first 12months where any faults in the products usually occurs. Once fixed however they generally seem to go on for years. Its just a matter of ironing the odd bug out and away you go. Its just the way I have learnt to look at Leicas and accept that about them. Look at your first rolls as the inital stress testing, the week points appear and fixed to be then quite reliable. I know its a weird perspective but most of those that returned stuff for warranty repair generally say "yes its going great now". Thats just the quirkyness of hand made stuff for you, they cant test every component individually prior to sale so its left to the user I guess. I think their pretty darn good passport warranty reflects their acknowledgement of this. When I look at this way, a fault or too isnt too bad to the years of reliable service it will ultimately give you. Thats my personal take on things all the same, it has served me better than Opra's Sunrise/Sunset philosphy anyways! I hope that helps you feel better.
