I have come to the conclusion that my most used and practical focal length is 50mm. Its damn near perfect. Having said that I started uploading all my 50mm shots to torralba.50mil.com where I am looking for feedback on my images. I know its nothing but 50 but it so sweet 🙂

Up until recently, my goto was the 35 of which I had far too many. On my last trip something switched and I used the 35 on only 2 images, the remainder being with the 50. I haven't touched the 35 since. How odd!

Thanks for the kind words. It's universal. I am hoping to see more 50 shots there as well.

I like your use of depth of field. Beautiful. You also have a real knack for photographing the less fortunate among us with compassion and humor, judging by the smiles. Keep up the good work.

I have tried 28 and especially 35 as my go-to lens. But I'm reminded again and again that 50 is my sweet spot. 28 is way too wide for me. 35 is much better, but I prefer 50 for everything from street photography to family. I only have a 35mm fixed lens camera now, but will likely return to Leica M world with a 50 this fall.

I started off with one RF camera and one lens, the 50mm summicron. I shot that exclusively for many years. After having sold my Leica kit 7 years ago, I'm just now getting back to rangefinders, and while I do have a 50, I'm shooting with a 35 to get the feel for that focal length. Deep down I'm still a 50 guy though.

50mm is definitely my favorite focal length. My first M lens was a Summicron 50. Later I got an Elmar M 50, and more recently a Zeiss Planar 50 ZM, as well as a Planar 50 ZF for my Nikon.

Yes Jiorge 50's Rule Supreme !
There are soooo many GREAT 50's to choose from
50 madness 😱

As of Late , I have been working with 35 FOV only because 50mm has been my constant companion, my true love
Now I am trying to challenge myself more...
however my new Goal is to focus more on Portraits
50mm to my eye does it the best , hmmm

Lovely Photos on Fluckr, Enjoyed them !

Impressive work, Jorge, you capture your neighborhood and its vitality beautifully. Your thoughts on technique and approach, appreciate you sharing them as well, practical and sensitive at once.

Thanks for showing me the way to your new website, Jorge.
I started out using almost exclusively 50mm lenses, then I started to use 35mm lenses more often, but I bounced back to the 50mm lenses as my main focal length. It just feels to right for me to use 50mm lenses.

Thanks.

There is a technique to photographing people which has proven to be fairly reliable for me. Read this: http://jorgetorralba.com/2015/04/25/street-photography-portland-style/

Jorge,

Thanks for your article. You have excellent advice. Perhaps it's just my personality, but my instinct is to usually photograph things and not people. Your technique is generous, and the results show it. I'll have to put it to work for me.

I thought your backgrounds looked familiar... I worked in downtown Portland for several years. I'm from Eugene and returned here 12 years ago. Keep up the good work.

Thanks again,
Scott

Glad you guys like what you see. I think in due time when word gets around, it will be a popular place for 50 users. Feel free to upload a few pics.

Im out today with the new Zeiss Sony 50 1.4. Tomorrow with the Nikon 50mm 1.2 AIS !!!
