As a followup to my post asking for advice on the D700 vs. the D7000, I received the D700 a week ago last Wednesday. I've had plenty of time to get familiar with its workings, settings, and in general get to know it. At this time I am totally amazed with this camera. With any of my AF lenses it works so very well. My Nikkor 24/2.8 which was pretty much unusable with the D70 is just superb! The 35.2 is incredible also. I am going to try to post three pictures with this, straight out of the camera with no PP whatsoever. I absolutely love the virtual horizon - for years my downfall with so many tilted photos- now a thing of the past. It is an incredible tool and I'm happy I got it now instead of waiting till the upgrade come out.
Edit: doesn't look like I can accomplish the post with pictures so I'll enter them in the Gallery, C&C welcomed.

I've always wanted a D700, I went the D7000 route though, as an upgrade to my D200. The 35/2 is my favourite lens... well it's on my camera 80% of the time. Enjoy!

I love my D700. I usually have my Nikkor 50mm f1.2 or the CV 40mm f2 mounted on it. Love it! I think it has enought bells and whistles to hold me for a while.

agreed on all points. I love the Nikon D700 and previously had a D300. When buying the D700, I went back and forth between the Nikon and the Canon 5D Mark II. In the end, I went with the D700 and found that the camera is EXACTLY what I want.

The modern full frame DSLR's are incredible aren't they! Bet you're glad you went full frame rather than another crop cam - as I said before, special lenses on full frame turn into average lenses on crop sensors.

I'm actually pretty ecstatic.

Just the differences I saw with the 24, 35, and 60 Micro would be enough for me to switch from Dx to Fx.

How do you like your D7000? The Specs. are very good. I have both FX and DX formats, and generally grab the DX for my personal stuff. It's smaller and lighter.. and has a bit more DoF. If Nikon upgrades the D700 this year, you'll be able to grab a D700 used.

I had one for a year. One of the best I have used in terms of image quality, high ISO performance and durability. It makes all the ancient MF lenses shine.
Enjoy

Very nice cameras. I have enjoyed mine so much for over 2 1/2 years that a replacement will have to be very exceptional for me to even consider up grading. Glad the choice worked out so well for you.

I used the D700 for awhile. Great camera, just not my thing at all (notorious DSLR hater). Loved the IQ, but couldn't get into the functionality. Went back to the M8.2 even though it has worse IQ for the most part. I hope Nikon makes a mirrorless with focus on manual controls one day... because I do think the IQ is great and some of the dirt cheap lenses are great too.

Tony, now I officially hate you 🙂
Been (and still) trying to justify pulling the trigger on D700.

I also have and like the 24/2.8 a lot.
That lens has a lot of character.

Congrats! I've been wanting one since they came out (as an upgrade from my D200), but the price has been holding me back. I've been anticipating another FX model from Nikon for several years now, so I'd kind of lost some interest in the D700. Until, a co-worker got one about three months ago. Excellent IQ! Great camera!

Will and Ray believe me the price was a big stumbling block for me but once I decided it was a go I did it. I have a lot of equipment but there are limits within me for my spending. For instance, there is no way I could spend $5K or $7K for any camera no matter who makes it and how good it is, that's just me. I can't and won't.
Francisco, read you blog and it is helpful to a D700 newbie. Keep up the blogging, your info is right on the money and interesting. Thanks for directing me there.

Cogratulations!

I really enjoy my D700. I do photography for real estate and the performance at ISO 800 makes a huge difference in my work. Getting commercial quality images at ISO 800 essentially doubles the the power of my off-camera strobes. Except for the 95% finder coverage, it is perfect for what I do. I can use LiveView when 100% coverage is essential, but cropping out the 1-3% I don't need is also practical.

I recently did two pro-bono weddings (I don't do weddings for $) and a friend lent me his 70-200 VRII and 85/1.4 G lenses. The results at ISO 1600 with the 70-200 VRII were mind blowing. After I figured out and practiced with the AF system I was amazed at it's speed and accuracy. I used the 85/1.4 G for candid work at the reception and it didn't mis-focus once.

Enjoy!
