My Amazing D700.

Small sensor is nice for when you need to move fast or under conditions like rock climbing.

But for the best images in a 35mm size body, full frame is where it is at.

Now to really go wild, put some Leica R lenses on one by changing mounts, Leitax or Fotodiox. Process is reversible.

I used the D700 for awhile. Great camera, just not my thing at all (notorious DSLR hater). Loved the IQ, but couldn't get into the functionality. Went back to the M8.2 even though it has worse IQ for the most part. I hope Nikon makes a mirrorless with focus on manual controls one day... because I do think the IQ is great and some of the dirt cheap lenses are great too.

The IQ is better than the M8's? Now that is quite a statement. So far, I have upgraded from D200 to D300. I think there is a D700 in my future, and jsrockit's observation about the IQ of the D700 is encouraging! I really like my D300. The high-ISO performance seems remarkable, for one thing.

I seem to have adjusted pretty well to the 1.5x crop factor, but it would be a relief to go back to using lenses at the FOV they were really meant to cover. So: I dream of a D700 at times.

Great camera to use in the studio for portraits, I might as well weld my 85mm 1.8 onto it because it's always mounted on the camera. Great high ISO performance, but also beautiful, greatly detailed images when shot at ISO 100.

I took the D200-D300-D700 path. I just love this camera.
I use it alongside my M8.2 for portraits and documentary work. The only drawback with the D700 is its size. Other than that, I really can't ask any more of a camera.

If it wasn't for me already picking up a few ef lenses for my Canon's I may have gone for the D700. The useable ISO 6400 sounds enticing. Enjoy that D700, it seems to be a superior machine.

The IQ is better than the M8's?

Well, the dynamic range and high ISO are certainly better under most circumstances. We are talking about a 5 years difference in sensor production though... and of course, some Leica fanatic will come in here and say I'm wrong, but... just IMO.
