I bought an M5 off the 'bay with a burnt shutter.
I was expecting the worse (i.e. big bill to repair). I've had it a couple days now, and I'm so overjoyed with its actual condition.
The hole wasn't so bad. I've re-sealed it with fabric paint, and the hole looks fully sealed. The camera cosmetics cleaned up beautifully. And it is a late serial number camera - long past the "broken roller shaft" issue of early M5's.
I'm one happy M5 owner !!!!

Oh, I'm looking for the little plastic insert on the preview lever. Does anyone have one? I found the plastic part for the film advance already.
If I can't find the plastic insert, I am going to carve up a Lego block to fit into the hole.

DAG has them, but they're probably the later M4-P/M6 style rather than the original M4/M5 style.

"Stop thief!"
Only kidding. Bravery gets the good deals! You have lots of money left over for lenses and film!

Yes, I budgeted a shutter curtain trip to DAG on my bid. Also, the end of the auction was mid-day. I think if it was to end in the evening, it would have sold for a lot more.

Well you told me you were getting one and I'm glad you have it now. They are very modern cameras so you should get a lot of use from the M5.
I use Waldgreens brand Zinc Air Hearing Aid batteries size 635 just a very little bit smaller than the ogiginals. But still a perfect fit. They are rated at 1.4V instead of the original 1.3v batteries that are not availablein the US. The exposures are fine. Cost is $4.99 for a set of 6 and they last over 4 months each. The set is usually good for a few years unopened and when you peel the tape from over the holes in the battery to let the air in that's when the battery is activated.

Are you sure about the battery number? I've seen 675 & know people use them with some shimming maybe. I've not heard of the 635. Also, internet rumor has it that if you cover all but one hole with clear nail polish the batteries last longer. Otherwise, I use Wein cells in my Gossen Luna Pro (same orginal battery as the M5) and they last quite awhile.
