first of all, happy belated independence day to all fellow RFFers from the Philippines and all the other countries celebrating that day.

second of all, that day was also my birthday and my family got me a brand new Reflecta RPS 7200 scanner that I'm about to try out.

it scans a whole roll of 135 film with up to 40 exposures at 7200dpi at once!

I'll be back with first results and some observations.

I am looking forward to see a 7200 spi scan scaled down to say 3600 spi and a direct 3600 spi scan. I have read that effective resolution at 7200 spi is around 3900 spi, so I wonder what is the effective resolution at 3600 spi.

So - enjoy and let us know!

alright, a full size 7200 dpi scan in .tif format results in a 430mb file and a resolution of more than 10.000px wide, while at 3600dpi the filesize is only ~100mb at a resolution of a bit more than 5000px (obviously)

I can see no real difference in sharpness between the two, but I think that's not because of the scan but rather the actual resolution of the film (rollei retro 100, not the sharpest thing in the world, obviously).

I love that scanner! not the software that comes with it, though. it's kind of ok, but SilverFast is probably a much better (and more expensive) option (if it doesn't crash all the time).

Would be very interested in seeing some 100% crops in different resolutions, I have been thinking of getting one of these to get better rendition of grain. Too often there seems to be an effect like moire, and I wonder if getting past 3000dpi would help...

If it had optical resolution to match the 7200 dpi, I would have gotten one straight away...
