My son is starting to see interest in shooting. He's just four, so there are no shots of his to share yet.... He runs to his room to get a point and shoot we've given him to play with whenever he sees me with my gear.

Nyet! I'd suggest letting her stick with automation so she can concentrate on seeing. Splended shots, especially the SOL. PLEASE don't teach her any of The Rules!

One of the best photographers I know happens to be a friend of mine. He's an illustrator and a total technophobe. Every now and then he asks me to explain some technical aspect of photography, but he usually shoots on Program and comes back with results that impress everyone. BTW, he's in his early fifties.
