I just saw the May issue of Shutterbug magazine & was quite disapointed on their review of the Leica M9. Four cameras are being reviewed this month. Nikon D3, Canon 1ds mkII, Sony A350 (Ithink)? & leica M9. The three DSLR's mentioned were shown with several examples of photos displaying what each camera was capable of, but not one single photo was shown from the M9. At first I thought maybe the reviewer,Jason Schneider (I believe is the name) perhaps didn't have a live camera to test with, but he did! He gave the camera decent reviews & only two negetives thoughts that I can recall! He said the 2 1/2" LCD wasn't up to par with the rest of the camera & complained that the camera only fired 2 burst per second, therefore limited in the action shots one can take at a sporting event. Who uses an M9 to shoot sporting events like one would use a Nikon D3. I really wish they would of given the assignment to Roger. BTW I didn't buy it!

Dear Greg,

You think YOU were disappointed and wish I'd done it! I was less than overjoyed myself. Apparently Jason got the job via Leica USA because he helped translate the instruction book into American.

When I found I wasn't going to be reviewing it for Shutterbug, I did a review on my site, where it's been up since January 18th : http://www.rogerandfrances.com/subscription/m9 review.html. There are over 20 pictures taken with it in that review.

Cheers,

R.

Roger I found both reviews from both you and Ken R. informative. Loved the portrait of Frances. The B&W conversion indeed mimics film! Hope your weather is much nicer now & her bout with PPR has subsided a bit. BTW my fav of Francis is the one with the cigar!🙂

Dear Greg,

It's one of her favourites too.

(For those who have not seen the pic in question and are having unsavoury sub-Clintonesque fantasies, it was in Florida in 2001. She was completely bald from chemotherapy for breast cancer and at one of the press jump-ups they were hand-rolling cigars for the journalists. She doesn't normally smoke -- two or three cigars in the almost 30 years I've known her -- but she couldn't resist hamming that one up).

Cheers,

R.

Actually Shutterbug did 5 reviews in that issue. All of them very complete except the Leica. not good. Roger your review on your site was the one that should have been there.

I did leave out the Pentax didn't I. I'm glad you too noticed that the leica review was a bit slack.
cheers!

It's a problem I think in the magazine business that editors don't dare to take risks anymore.. you can almost bet on any new camera review to follow on a review template, mention all the technical pros and cons and if you're lucky show a few sample photos as well. A lot of the magazines here also just buy articles from specialized agencies that do nothing else than write reviews or news articles on new gear.
Roger, much enjoyed your review. Too bad you didn't officially got to review it for the magazine.
