...guzzles fuel like there's no tomorrow; is not outstandingly reliable; and costs a fortune to repair. Should I replace my Ferrari with a BMW? Or a Ford?

Admittedly I don't own a Ferrari, but several of my friends do. Or used to. One had several. But in the sentence "Should I replace my Ferrari with a BMW?" replace "Ferrari" with "Leica" and "BMW" with "Nikon". Also think about whether the person asking the question has ever driven a Ferrari or used a Leica.

Cheers,

R.

Bought my first VW Beetle in 1969. It was a 67. Paid $1400, it had about 10,000 miles on it. Also got my first "real" camera. a Nikon F, no meter (can't remember the price). Still have the Nikon. Blew the Bug out in 72. Ferrari's are nice, too.

Roger, I understood what you were inferring to before even reading the second sentence, see what RFF addiction can do to you? 😀

On to the subject, yes, I have used a Leica but enjoy SLR shooting more.

I think Olympus is like Nissan, quirky, weird models, yet when it hits the mark, it performs really well.

Never had a Ferrari, but I could do the "My Ducati 998 Superbike, guzzles fuel like there's no tomorrow; is not outstandingly reliable; and costs a fortune to repair. Should I replace my Ducati with a Honda?"

Did sell the Ducati . . . for a Triumph.

Nikons and Canons and Leicas are all good cameras, made for different shooting situations.

Best,
-Tim

Sell your ferrari? It depends, heard some rumours that the newer ones have some issues with corrosion. Seems like the engine does not handle humid weather, also make sure you do not clean it.

Also it seems like it takes some time to get the engine replaced.

I would say that if you can afford a Leica and you want one, go for it.
If you can afford a Ferrari and you want one, go for it.

If the Leica is the Ferrari in this scenario, surely a Nikon is more like a Landrover ? Dependable and durable and just plain utilitarian, but I would take the Landrover any day.

Never wanted a Ferrari but always fancied a Maserati. Only ever had one Ford (a late Granada) but was very pleased at the small bill on the one occasion it needed fixing.
Struggling a bit with the camera comparisons as I've never owned a Leica but wouldn't say no to one. I did try several Contax SLRs as they had a luxurious reputation at the time but actually preferred their Yashica stablemates.... maybe I just have a natural aversion to "the best money can buy", or maybe I hate going with the "accepted norm".
Definitely don't want a BMW!

Mileage is not great, but not atrocious -it is also not something you really think about with an exotic car of any flavor. Reliability is relative to use and maintenance, which can be expensive. The highest "routine" service bill I ever saw was 15k.

I always thought of Leica as more of a Mercedes-Benz.

Well no one drives a Ferrari for fuel economy; with regards to reliability, there's always the backup vehicle. I've never known a Ferrari owner to own only one vehicle. 🙂

Since when did Germans start comparing their equiipment to Italian made equipment??

Oh, never mind, that was an Englishman making the comparison. 😀

EDIT- I'll take the Vette
