...at developing B&W.

I bought a changing bag, tank etc a few weeks ago and this afternoon developed a roll of HP5 in Jessops own brand dev/stop/fixer. (Jessops is a UK photo shop chain). I shot them on my G2, mostly with the 21/2.8 Biogon.

I've probably overcooked things on the developing front but boy was it fun.

Attached are some shots, scanned on a CanoScan D2400U and fiddled with in PS7 (levels/USM). Dust is a bugger too isn't it? 🙁

I don't see what you mean by "overcooked" because the scans are looking nice. Just a bit soft, but perhaps that has to do with the scanner.

Once you've tried it, you can only do it again, and again, and again....

Looks good to me although it looks a bit soft, but as said it may be the scanner. I have just done my first roll myself. I should have really practiced with one reel first, as most of the pics did not come out because of an accident putting the film onto the reel. I am using HP5 and ID-11 myself. I am not sure about HP5 in 35mm, but love it in 120. Does aynone know if Neopan 400 combines well with ID-11 as I prefer this in 35mm.

I think they're overcooked because I had to use levels to compensate for the overdevelopment evident on the original scans. Can overdevelopment contribute to softness?

Overdevelopment won't give you softness as such but the contrast may be a bit much for the scanner to cope with. Scanners always seem to like slightly thin negatives. Reducing the contrast in PS may give an impression of softness. My rule of thumb for getting thinner negs was to use Ilford's 24C times at 20C. This gave the right reduction for my old condensor enlarger with the added benefit that they also scanned well.

Yup, all from around Salt's Mill and the Leeds-Liverpool canal nearby. I live about a mile away.
