My First Pictures from Kiev 4a

I got my first pictures back from the lab from my Kiev 4a I bought from Flashover. I was very impressed. The Lab scans the negs to 2400x3600 JPGs. But they show a bit of noise in the org. Could be the 400 ISO film though. I have a 125 ISO in now. So I can compare later.

Anyway, I was able produce a decent result with a bit of USM and then a "Edge Preserving Smooth" noise Filter set to the min needed to elimate the noise without getting any edge softness.

They do have that "Old Film" quality to them. That is way I bought the Kiev. To emulate that texture. I could not seem to do it with my Canon D60 and software.

Nice job, Arbib! I agree with you regarding the "old film" quality from kievs. It's what I like about FSU glass.

I like the photos.

If you have a good J8m you can see improvement from 125, or tripod, or high definition developer, a J8m in good condition optically and mechanically is a Zeiss clone. To be fair I dont always carry a monopod, and my Sonnar is just detectably sharper, it has not been sandblasted or stripped.

Your next step may be tank and enlarger... both cheap if you dont need a new house for a spare (dark) room.

Nice shots Arbib! Thanks for sharing your results... I like your first one looking through the bare branches at the house & barn. I have always liked photos that give a sense of 'seeing through' (not necessarily where you shouldn't be looking though!)...

Been thinking about a tank developer and Good Film Scanner. 🙂 Enlarger will have to wait. But I do have an extra Bathroom I can use. You know, Wood over bathtub with a 2 foot gap at the spiket for a wash tray. NO Windows in this bathroom either. If I could find an OLD Omega B8 or Bogon.

But, all that will have to wait. Just put out my "almost" last GAS purchase (Nikkormat FTn with 50/2). I may get a few Nikkor lens's from a photo buddy in a few weeks. All I know he is that has mentioned, is a 70-200/4 Nikkor, but he said he said he had a few others he would sell me cheap ! That will HAVE TO BE MY LAST GAS PURCHASE for a while, or my wife will hang me by my B***s from the 2nd story roof. 😱

Almost did not post it. But I liked the small lower right corner. it is not a reflection, but it gives that impresion. As with the whole in the wall next to it.

My thought was to add depth by framing the picture with branches on both sides. But, the right side did not corroperate with the BEST composision. (dang I can't spell :bang: )

But the "see through" effect worked great.
