My First Rolls with Rangefinders

I'm a fourth year design student and I have recently acquired this obsession of collecting rangefinders and snapping at anything that I find interesting.

I am posting a few of my recent photos here so that all of you can shed some wisdom on my adventures.

Very nice. What did you use to take these? What RFs do you have? The first, in particular, is very sharp.

Last one left me cold... but not the first ones. I like the fact that the balance seems strange, missing or uncommon (except for the kid portrait, that really doesn't say much). Otherwise, there's a particular dimension to the one with the kids and the football... that speaks of suburbia, private vs public spaces.

I like the first one as example of that hidden balance. You must have seen a design in that image that made you think of an abstract composition.

Good job, I'd say... Not my usual fare, but not bad either. And, in case you did it, good scanning too!

Thank you. I have updated the post with the camera names for each shot. Mostly Minolta Hi-Matic 7s though.

Thank you for your detailed analysis. The photographs definitely do not belong to one set. I feel a lot of photography have a very conservative balance to their compositions, and I feel life is not about rule of thirds (although it is important to know about it). Hence these photographs lack that conventional balance found in other work. The kids and the football, I took that photo from my bedroom window. These kids were playing in my driveway. I agree about this photograph talking about personal/private space and the life within the western suburbia.

Also wanted to ask if any of you guys would recommend me to see a particular contemporary photographer's work for inspiration...

I would like to get into street photographer, with more people. But I couldnt find a chance to.

Recently got my hands on a Vivitar 35ES and a Ricoh 500GX, and can't wait to use them in downtown Toronto.

picture N° 5 is in my opinion excellent: the urban landscape with his colours, his emptiness, the cars passing is really a good description and giving the atmosphere of our times. More the two boys playing with the ball makes the picture alive. And the shoes at the border of the road is a good detail.

I'm probably not going to spend any more money on a fixed lens rangefinder for now, and get a Bessa r3a in the future.
