A friend of mine just gave me an Olympus Pen EES and I just read the instructions online and I would like to ask you guys if there is anything I should check before putting a roll in it..I just got the camera an hour ago and it is 5:00am here, so I plan on putting a roll of asa100 in it tomorrow and go shooting ......not sure how the meter works on it, but I'll find out tomorrow...

...I know the shutter is automatic and the it seems like the only thing that I set is the focus (3 different settings)......so, is there anything else that I should be aware of?..........thanks in advance

cheers, michael

That's one of the half-frame, selenium-meter compacts? I have an EE, which has no focussing at all but is otherwise similar I think. Before running a roll (a short one, else 80 exposures takes a long time) through you can point the camera at light or dark things and check that the aperture gives some different results depending on the light. Try changing the EI setting and watch for relevant changes in the aperture again.

Note that on my EE a half-press on the shutter will close the aperture to the shooting setting, without taking the picture until it's fully depressed. This is perfect for checking the camera, and also for "exposure locking" when you have a backlit scene or whatever, as you can measure off the grass etc.

The only other thing might be the usual sticky-foam light-seals which could be replaced. The quick fix for that problem, for shooting a test-roll, is black tape round the back.

Thanks a lot Martin, yes it does have the selenium meter.....the shutter does act differently when I point it at different light sources, so I guess that is a good thing....I am going to put some gaffers tape around the back and try the camera out today....thanks again.....cheers, michael

Hi Michael

Hi Michael

I have the EE2 which I think is similar, but with a slower (28/3.5) fixed lens.

Other than focusing, I think your only other control is the ASA dial to allow you some control over exposure.

The challenge might be to find a minilab setup where they can scan 1/2 frame to single files, and cut negatives properly if you're not developing your own.

Also, the EE2 has only 2 shutter speeds, that the camera selects, I can't remember the program setting at which EV it kicks over.

The selenium meter, from what is probably mid or late '60s, seems spot on.

Here are some samples from one of my first rolls:
