My friend's proposed trade

So, I was wondering what ya'll thought of this proposed trade. For purposes of ease and clarity, lets assume that all of the gear listed below is in mint condition used.

I give up:

  1. Noctilux f1 e58 without hood (no box)
  2. Dual Range 50 'cron with googles & hood (no box)

He gives me:

  1. M9 w/ box & original materials, Thumbs up, Artist & Artisan Case
  2. Pre-ASPH 50 summilux w/ built in hood (has box and all original materials)

Let me know what you guys think. It seems to me like this is a very fair trade for both parties. However, I'm not sure if I'll ever come across a noctilux again.

um, check the values of the items.

Nocti - $5K or more
DR Summicron - $750?

50 'lux pre-ASPH - is probably equal or more than the DR.

So, you're tradingn E58 Nocti for an M9.

I figure dollarwise, it is the same. Keep in mind that Nocti's can push upwards of $7K and the M9 will only go down in value.

Ask yourself if you want an M9. Will you use it more than the Nocti? A Nocti does one thing well - f1 wide open. No other lens does that. From f1.4 onwards, the other Leica lenses are superior.

The only thing that beats an f1 Nocti is the f1.2 Nocti but that is a whole different ball game.

The M9 does digital very very very well for Leica rangefinder lenses. Better than any other digital solution that I've had for Leica lenses, although I've only shot RD1, M8 and Panasonic GF1.

Not answering your question for you, but, it is what I'd be thinking about.
 
don't do it unless you really want/need a digital M.

as mentioned the noctilux will keep its value, the m9 won't, and you can always use the noctilux on film or an epson r-d1 or an m8, or even point and shoot cameras with adapters.

a year from now
the Noct is likely to be worth at least a $1000 more than the M9
that difference will only increase with time.

People are already looking to dump M9s for the new M, and looking for the best price or trade they can get. I'd wait. It won't be long before you'll be able to pick up an M9 for $3-4k, while the price of good lenses might keep climbing.
 
(1) How much do you use the Noctilux?

(2) How much would you use an M9?

Forget 'exchange value' of substantially incomparable items (is a pig worth more or less than a bed?) and concentrate on use value.

Then hold on to it. As you say, how likely are you to find another? Wait for the M9. Sell something else.

But this still has very little to do with exchange value.

Yes that's true. However, the M9 would certainly be my go to camera body. I love my M6 and M3 and wouldn't trade/sell them for anything (hope to pass them down to my kids one day). However, film is becoming more expensive to buy/develop and perhaps it's time to jump ship -- especially considering the quality files the M9 produces.
 
Well everything has a market price, and I don't think Leica lenses will go up automatically in value by $1000 every year. Personally, I think the BIG jump in Leica lenses came after the M9 came out. Lens prices have been soft lately because of: 1) the slow economy and 2) the Chinese real estate market is bleeding. Yes, one of the biggest reasons for the spike in Leica lens prices has been the growth of the Chinese economy in the past decade. Ask Ferrari, LVMH or any other luxury good purveyor how much of their business is in Asia.

That said, everything has a going "street price" and anything can be bought for the right money. Going price for Nocti E58 w/hood $4900-$5700

Used M9 with box and less than 4k shots: $4100-4700
50mm Pre-ASPH MINT w/box: $2500 maybe?

No, it's not a "once in a lifetime deal" where some little old lady sells her late husband's "old cameras" to you for $10.00 and they turn out to be Leicas. But it's a pretty decent deal.
