And by funky, I mean it stinks. To me it sort of smells like a combination of ciggarettes and old man b.o. It's the small QL17 I've been waiting for in the mail.
Is there anything I can do? It seriously is driving me nuts. :bang:
Also, is there a way to test the canonet flash without a bettery in the ql17?
There seem to be some other problems as well, but I'll search the forum before asking.
ACCKK! now my hands even stink from holding it.... :bang: :bang: :bang:

Open it and put it in a bag with an open box of baking soda for a month (or 2).

You may think this is odd. Take a slice of white bread, place it on a saucer and soak the bread in white vinegar. Place the saucer with the vinegar soaked bread and the camera into a sealable container like a tupperware cake holder or some such thing. Check it in about 48 hours. You may have to repeat.

A month or two????
anyone want to trade a ql17 w/flash and case for a ql17 w/flash and case? mine stinks, and yours shouldn't.
Any word on the testing the flash? All my other flashes make powering up noises when they get turned on, and this one doesn't and until i can get a battery for the ql17, i can't test it on camera. would my EOS fire it?
It also seems that the aperature blades are a little slow to move at times, is there a remedy for this that I can do myself?

Yes, Wayne, I think it is odd...but i'll try it. Should the back be open?
And GHM, if I had known I would have slipped you some Cubans with the camera!

You can open the back if you want, but I would imagine that the odor has been absorbed by the covering of the camera. I bought an entire collection of cameras last year from an 84 year old man and there was a definite odor to some of the cameras and manuals.
Also, you may try spraying Fabreeze onto the camera covering.

ok, tried the flash and it's not firing...but the inside is corroded. from now on I only buy camera stuff from RFers or photo people.
i am going to leave it be for now and go have a wobbly pop on the patio...and that trade is a serious offer to anyone

I put some notes on that flash in the repair section if you want to look there...Clean the contacts, put in new batteries and turn it on. Should make noise and the ready light will
come on. use an insulated wire across the bottom contact and the one on the side and it should fire. It has more voltage than you want to run thru an EOS body but put it on your canonet and it will fire without a battery. I use a tooth brush and Fantastik cleaner on my cameras, clean it inside and out, then set in the sun for a while. If you have slow shutter blades, well thats not an easy fix at all..

It's a shame you are the other side of the Atlantic. I have to admit my blue one now smells as well - Just the faintest whiff of real leather

I got the flash working again with a thorough cleaning, but have still not heard from the seller. How long should I wait until I file bad feedback and contact ebay?
Anyone know if Ebay will help me or am I s.o.l.?

Well, i'll try the vinegar trick until then, just in case...that sticky shutter though is pretty brutal still.
it'll be gsn shooting this weekend.

I find that if you just let your camera air out in front of a fan or something, you'll get the smell out pretty fast.

So i just got an email from the seller today, after threatening to go to ebay and paypal. He told me the camera came from a smoke free home! He thought I was disassembling it and doesn't want to give a refund...I have corrected him, so we'll see how he responds.

The word disassemble was in the email i sent him, as in 'i do not want to disassemble it' and i mentioned i was trying to work in the aperature (but rotating the bezel a bit)...I hope it was just a misunderstanding. He also claimed it was in perfect working order when he mailed it, and he seemed to imply that it was not working due to my medling. I did do the vinegar thing, which worked a bit, but nothing else.
I just know I am going to end up with bad feedback for paying on time and pointing out that the seller's description was not accurate.

From now on I wait and buy all my cameras from the nice people here at RF. This is about the nicest forum I have ever been on, including FM and those other ones.

Well, the seller is being a bit of a jerk, first by not responding and second by becoming a bit aggressive in his tone (at least I read it that way), so I've now filed my first Paypal complaint! YAY!

As of yesterday, I have found that I have won my paypal dispute! yay! though i do have to ship it back at my expense and I also incurred a $30CAD expense in having the damage to the camera doccumented.
ah well, it's better than nothing i guess, but the system does seem to punish the buyer for a seller's dishonesty. i'm going to try and limit my online purchases to people in here from now on i think, as you folks are about the best i've come accross on the net...

an update...
so having won the dispute I dutifully dent the camera back to the seller and gave paypal the tracking number. unfortunately, although I could make the tracking number work on Canada Post's website, the people at paypal could not. They have closed the case and refused to give me a refund. The seller gets his camera back and I'm out almost $100 in the whole deal...a PITA for someone in my financial situation. I am pretty frustrated, whch is why I'm venting. I've had to reread this and erase all the bits that contained the invective...
I can't wait until i see the camera on ebay again.
