I recently sent my Jupiter 3 to Brian Sweeney for some TLC. I could not be happier with my lens. The lens had been worked on by a previous owner who modified it for closer focus. The rangefinder was way off on my M6. Brian had to do some filing and then adjusted for w/o perfection on his digital M.
Two from today with my Panasonic G1 IR and the Jupiter 3.

Thanks, Ted and Ray.
Ted, you are the one who brought Brian's magic to my attention when I purchased my "Sweeneyized" Jupiter 8 from you.

This J-3 was interesting: interior metal cuts in the slots for the guide pins that hold the inner/outer helical together, and a cut in the slot for the close-focus stop. BUT- it stopped there, the threads of the mount had to be files down so the RF follower could keep up with the Cam. This J-3 goes to about 0.65m!

I know it's probably "better" to ask Brian privately because each lens is unique and will require it's own special work but, out of curiosity, is it affordable to get a lens fixed a la Sweeney?

I've oft looked at the Russian lenses and considered them as reasonably priced alternatives but would Sweenifiying the lens put it too far out of one's price range as compared to say a new CV lens?

Cheers,
Dave

Hi Cindy

Hi Cindy

Yes, I remember that lens. It is incredibly sharp. This one was taken with an M8 with your Sweenyized J8:

I got mine back from Brian just in time for a trip to LA. I'll get some photos up when I get home and process the rolls. I do know that the focus looked dead on and the lens quite sharp. I'm really looking forward to seeng the results.

Yes, the results look great.

Brian: Can most J-3 lenses be adapted to focus down to so close?

This lens was done nicely- buy you need to cut metal to do this. Filing down the guide-screw slots would not be gard, making a cut for the close-focus stop took some care. All that was done prior to me seeing it, but the original machinist did not file down the mount for the RF coupling to get in closer than 0.9m.

Next "bad condition" J-3 that I pick up, I will probably try cutting he close stop.

Dave I have dealt with Brian on a number of occasions and for different reasons and have always found him to be more than fair in every case! I have yet to sell anything he has worked on or purchased from him. I consider them all keepers baring some unforseen problems.

Keep us informed how that experiment ill work out for you, Brian.
Thanks for all your assistance.

Yes, Paul, but it depends on how close the elements are. This shot shows the bokeh in another way. The colors from the lens are very vibrant. G3 and Jupiter 3

The Jupiter-8 and Jupiter-3 are very easy to work on, and Kim Coxon and I have instructions posted on the web for the job.

I do this as a hobby, kitchen table work. Provides a change from writing firmware for embedded systems.
