I have three Kievs (notice capital letter!) - a 3, a 4, and a 4a. The 3 and 4 have meters, but, of course, not the 4a. All three have the J-8 lens (one a J-8M), and the 4a, purchased from Fedka in NYC, also has a Helios 103. I'm not overly concerned about outside appearance, just that they function as picture takers. After all, they do have a few years on them.
I think that the meter on my kiev3, 3a is no longer functioning properly. However, the meters on kiev4, kiev4m (60's, 70's, 80's) still produce very good reading within their limitation. I was told that the meter on kiev RF gave good exposure parameters (reflect on the lens coating characteristic under high and low light conditions). If a regular meter is used, it's recommended that one extra stop be opened (increase light input).
