My Leica M6 rewind knob wont work

Today happened during trip that my Leica M6 rewind knob somehow tightens so hard that I cant load the shutter because its too stiff and the film inside might snap.

This happens every 10-12th frame of the film.

Does anyone here ever had a same problem?

Yep - something in the rewind mechanism comes loose, and then jams tight when you rewind, or in my case after shooting about 12 frames. Sherry K tightened it up for me when I had the camera serviced. I thought I had some discussions bookmarked, but can't find it now.

I had mine completely seize shortly after I noticed it getting really tight. It happened one day when I was on assignment, on a tight timeframe and stress out and I forced it and snapped something inside. Turns out I busted one of the forks inside. I bought a $15 replacement, opened it up and fixed it the following week. It's an incredibly easy fix if you have the clamps, spanner wrench and some micro drivers. Lucky I had all these as I do many of my own repairs.

ah the pitfalls of the change to the rewind design. yes I have heard of this too and experienced it once in my m4 before fixing it up.

Yes, the slotted washer under the rewind knob comes loose and jams the rewind knob - it also stops you from winding on if it occurs mid roll. More info here:

It's actually the fixes the top plate at one end, if you tap the top plate you can hear whether it's tight or not...

Common problem and easily fixed. My M6 had the same problem. In my case it was the entire top plate that was slightly loose. There was movement by about half a mm. Thirty minutes in Leica Ginza and it was fixed.

Happened one time with my M7 when I loaded the film incorrectly, I kept rewinding it although it was very stiff, I thought I would snap the film rewind mech but I survived.. So far so good after I make sure to load properly and slowly since then.

This is the most common Leica problem with M4-M7 angled rewind cranks and is the reason why the MP reverted to the reliable M2/M3 style. If you need faster rewinding, the solution is an add on crank, or leicavit.

SLR's got it right by not doing the angling thing.
