My neighborhood....lets see yours

I have two neighborhoods, one in central Florida in the US and the other in rural eastern Cuba. Here in Florida, Robert Griffin always is beside the road selling watermelons on weekends during the season. Robert is from an old local family once notable for their agricultural labor contracting businesses. That business has shifted from providing local agricultural workers to an immigrant based work force. Robert is now retired but still sells watermelons for the social contacts. The first photo I made over 20 years ago documenting this community was of Robert selling watermelons beside this road.

My other neighborhood is a rural small town in Cuba that is very patriotic. This is one of the local schools on an outing to honor Camilo Cienfuegos, one of the heroes of the Revolution, whose plane mysteriously disappeared with any trace. I photograph this annual event in some town every year. This was out in the countryside with only 2 parents and me watching. But they carried the flag as if they were in a major parade.

I've lived in very many countries and neighborhoods. Not sure if I'd want to post a picture of kids marching behind a flag. Cheers, OtL

Sorry, your logic completely went over my head. Can you explain why? It's pretty hard to find any semi-organized group of students in Cuba not carrying a flag.

Is it OK to post a photo of students carrying the banner for the UJC, the Union of Young Communists and one for the FEEM, which is the part of the UJC specifically for students?

Or, a student dance group with flags ready to march into Fidel's birthday celebration?

Maybe it was the "wrong" flag? Please post more of these wonderful shots, Bob. :)
 
i love these shots Bob and in the second one the smiles and body language suggest these students are enjoying themselves!

David, all Cubans are natural performers without regard to the size of the audience. This local small town dance group jumped at the opportunity to go on stage and perform for an audience of several thousand and broadcast on national TV at Fidel's birthday celebration. I love that they are never bothered by their outfits which were cobbled together and do not match. New challenge for many new to photographing in Cuba is most Cubans immediately react to a camera by striking a pose. You must be fast.

Midday in Havana, I noticed a flamboyant gay and a guy carrying a Leica M walking down the street. As we passed an open air bar / restaurant with the typical Cuban band playing, the gay guy walked in and jumped up on the stage with the band to perform for two songs. Then he danced out the door as the crowd roared and just continued down the street.

Thanks to this thread, I finally ventured out with my cameras this afternoon and attempted to capture a number of images. This after far too much time had passed since I had last done so. Hopefully my efforts are rewarded with something to share here. Even if that doesn't prove to be the case, I'm grateful for the motivation that I found.
