My neighborhood....lets see yours

Milton, Indiana is a small town, laid out and platted in 1824, with a 2025 population of 840.

First December 2025 stop was at the remains of the Clerk's Office.

Milton, Indiana.

What a difference, for on an early 2016 Milton visit the Clerk's Office was an All-American site. Blue sky, White building and American Flag

The only business in town is a food mart.

Milton, Indiana.

Really now, open 24 hours?. For a community of this size that seems like a bit of overkill.

In February, 2009 found, while walking in a back alley,

Union City, Indiana.

a building that appeared to be empty and forgotten.

On this early cold and damp 2025 morning, discovered

Union City, Indiana.

the building had been completely cleaned up, refreshed, appearing brand new and ready for an occupant.

Moving a bit to the right to view the buildings East side

Union City, Indiana.

found a rather spectacular mural depicting the history of the location.

If retro dive bars are the in thing these days, Bertie's definitely fits the bill.

Richmond, Indiana.
Bertie's Music Bar on East Main Street is a Indiana neighborhood bar, so you get exactly what you expect.
Beer, mixed drinks, food, music, dart boards, pool table, and a friendly welcoming atmosphere all making it a popular choice for both locals and tourists.

Walking around to the buildings East side, for a full view

of a proper wall mural for a music bar.

On an earlier Knightstown, Indiana 2019 visit

Knightstown, Indiana.

photographed this mural depicting the Hoosiers 1986 movie Hickory basketball team.

At the time it was located on a building

Knightstown, Indiana.

in the center of town.

In October 2025, the location is a little different as

Knightstown, Indiana.

the mural is gone and the For Sale bank building is now Li LuLu's Playhouse and the Plumber is replaced by Antiques.

In traveling across the Midwest, you often encounter a group of three crosses standing like sentinels along roadways.

Wayne County, Indiana.

One night in 1984, the Reverend Bernard Coffindaffer, a Marine veteran and a native of West Virginia, had an epiphany. It was his desire to remind people that Jesus had been crucified at Calvary to forgive their sins and that he’d be coming back again.

He never took a penny from anyone to construct and erect the crosses, spent more than $3,000,000, and raised the last group in Ozark, Alabama, in September 1993.

Less than a month later, on October 6, 1993, he suffered a fatal heart attack at home.

Pure Oil Company was an American petroleum company founded in 1914.
The Pure Oil Company operated retail service stations across the country. The company's first service station opened in Dayton, Ohio in 1918.
Its one-story English cottage style gas station building is typical of gas stations built in the 1930s in order to harmonize with their residential surroundings.

Richmond, Indiana.
Pure Oil operated 16,000 service stations in the United States and in 1965 merged with the Union Oil Company of California.
Today, while the company is gone, many of their buildings still exist, have been updated and repurposed.

Here's how I describe Key West: "It's the most Florida place in Florida."
We never even set foot in Key West, having been there once before and vowing "Never again!" But driving down Rte.1 outside Marathon one night, I spotted a five-foot-high illuminated inflatable Mr. Hankey on someone's roof. Howdy-ho, and Merry Christmas, Florida style!
And in the interest of full transparency, your photo of the Monster Beetle has given me serious GAS. I want one. Bad.

A bit of background: Union City is a single community split by the Indiana and Ohio state line, with a city on the Indiana side and a village on the Ohio side. Both municipalities are geographically linked and cooperate on community initiatives, but they have distinct local governments and separate census data.

Union City, Indiana is a declining city in Randolph County that was platted in 1849, 11 years after, also declining twin village, Union City in Darke County, Ohio,. The 2025 population for Union City, Indiana, is 3,391 and the 2025 population for Union City, Ohio, is 1,370.

First visited the area on a Sunday morning 2009. For several reasons never managed to return until a rather dark, gloomy and cold 2015 Saturday morning. After a hurried photo walkabout came across, open for business, Luz Tacos. I was cold and it appeared warm so in I went.

Union City, Indiana. ca. 2015

Inside, while warm, it was rather dark. Spotted a older women at a counter in the back and headed over to her. We looked at each other for a moment and then ordered a burrito. She just smiled and remained looking at me. Then it hit me - she didn't speak English. Now my one year of college Spanish was a very long time ago. Was about to give it go when another women appeared, speaking English, asked what I ordered and then translated the request in Spanish to the older women who started to prepare my order. Without a doubt, maybe it was the weather or perhaps I was just cold and tired, but that was the very best Burrito outside my experiences in Mexico. Have often wished to return for another real Mexican meal.

Returned on a Sunday in December 2025, off course while still in business, it was closed.

As next week is open, might be a fine time to revisit Union City, Indiana for a Mexican Lunch.
