Hi all, just finished re-painting this fed-2 that I got about a year ago for 20 euros from russia. Works pretty smoothly, but I havent actually run a test roll through it😱 I hope the red trim will stay on it for some time, I have a feeling I didn't do such a good job on it and it might get scratched easily. btw, the skin is from Aki Asahi, which is really nice but... i ordered the wrong type 🙄 and had to cover up a hole with another piece of leather. 🙂

I love FSU cameras painted black. Some further proposals:

a) You can make the chrome knobs shine by immersing them in a bath of thinner (not any color number marks are to be immersed) and afterwards or instead of that further pass a teeth brush to deep cleaning.

b) To my taste, a black camera fits a light brown case. If you have one, polish it with clear brown shoe cream, not liquid. The idea is to clear the medium brown of the case, not to darken it. And of course you can make the best strap out of the original fed case, to directly attach to the camera, with black painted connerctors. Camera and strap as women bag and shoes; the same color.

c) if you have a collapsible lens, you can make a nice hood out of a cap from T-max developer. Paint it black too.

d) I think no need to tell you that for best lasting paint, a primer layer is due, and a second painting of black and red main parts, AFTER 3 or 4 WEEKS. If you have just finnished painting, you can use the camera with care, but the painting will be really dry only then.

d) Whenever money is available, Oleg will silence and soften it to unbelievable levels.

But the camera as is, with your work already done as it has been done, deserves my deep congrtulations !

Cheers.
Ruben

ps
And you have done a great job with the logo !

Did you disassemble it yourself to repaint it? Looks like a good job to me! What kind of paint did you use?

Regards,
Tom

yes I disassembled it using the sticky instructions and used a primer and Acrylic car paint in spray cans. Cant say how durable it is, probably not very, but time will show. The red trim might get chipped on the edges though. Its just for fun project, its not meant to last a lifetime, or look professionally done. The ukrainian painters could do a much better job for sure. well, I am half ukrainian, so its probably half so good 😉

Yes, it does look great! I think you did a fine job! I see that you are living in Germany! Where abouts in Germany? Are there lots of FSU cameras to be had there?

Regards,
Tom

ruben, thanks for the great tips! I only did one layer of color, but next time I'll try two. I do have a collapsible, so I'll try making a cap, as well

but first, i gotta see if this thing takes photos 😀

thanks all.
I live not far from Hamburg. There are quite a few FSUs on German ebay but probably not more than in US, I almost never see them in stores. Once I was at a camera show in east germany, and there was a polish guy selling tons of FSU stuff, I got my first fed2 and a good J-9 from him.

I have never seen any FSU cameras around here, but I bet there are some! I have never seen any in the few camera stores here in Indianapolis. Looks like some are available on the internet and certainly EBAY!

Regards,
Tom
