ok, just had a nice exchange of emails with another forum member - am getting a black paint, leica ii circa 1938... should be here next week - it will need a replacement leather -- no biggie- - may go the jade green or some such --- what other accessories are there for this? may get a rasul finder.... will need a nice leather case.... and a lens... the rabbit hole never ends, does it?

now i need an ablon, a good canon 28mm serenar, a 12mm cv, finders for both, a nice leather case, a nice leather strap, and so forth

pics to come soon

Yep, get a good lens. 5cm f3.5 Elmar is the standard classic. A 5cm brightline finder. Sorry, the case won't close with the finder on top. Then you're pretty much set.

Yes indeed, a Leica is a "license to spend money". If it's 1938, are the metal bits chrome instead of nickel plated? That would make it much easier to find a vintage lens that matches. I agree that the Elmar is the best way to go, and they can often be found without taking a second mortgage on your house.
It sound like you already know, but here's the place to get replacement leatherette coverings.

In my limited experience they look exactly right and fit perfectly. Here's a pic of a camera I recovered with their stuff. This camera was originally chrome, but it was in horrible shape so I stripped and painted it, but no modern paint job is anywhere near as good as the original paint finish it seems.

If you want to blow a pile of money by wild accessorizing, I've been there too!

You'll love it. I'm selling all my other Leicas, and keeping this one. A 1930 nickle conversion to IID, with 11 O'clock Hektor. I never use slow speeds so don't need the III.

Mine is chrome but I still love it. It is very easy to pack around with my pre-war 50/3.5 Elmar. It also happens to take great black and white images, which does not hurt.

Hi,

What will ruin you is going down the contemporary path. Getting an original instruction manual, exposure guide (for the little pocket in the ERC) and lens cap can cost more than the body and lens. And then there's the export certificate and so on. But it can be fun and will keep you slim as you won't be able to afford to eat...

Regards, David

Congrats on your purchase! You won't regret it. I sold my Leica M's too and live the good life now with two Leica II's and a GXR. My BP Leica II is a nickel one, I have matching Elmars 3.5/50mm, 4.0/90mm and 4.5/135mm. The 50mm and 135mm are nickel, the 50mm is an adapted Leica I lens.

The picture shows my camera with a modern Voigtlander Heliar 2.0/50mm in nickel. The nickel matches perfectly and the lens is stellar!

There's a real nice Nikkor 2.0/50mm in the classifieds now, that keeps blinking an eye at me every time I check whether it's still there... 😀 check the ad with the two canon lenses in a picture...

Johan, that really is a nice combination!🙂

This morning I was happily engaged in restoring some corroded IXMOO cassettes back to shiny brass with metal polish.

My wife, who is lukewarm about photography but tolerates my near obsession with old Leicas because she loves me dearly, asked me what I was doing with these ''funny things that look like bullets...''.

Upon being told, she commented ''I bet you're the only man on God's earth who's still messing about with old cameras. Why don't you get a digital camera like everyone else ?''

I then had a brainwave.

A quick scan on RFF brought up this thread.

On being shown pictures of Dez's black 111C and Huubl's and goamules's black 11's and reading the accompanying words, she could see that there were indeed other ''old camera'' enthusiasts/lunatics beside myself out there, and perhaps I wasn't such a unique oddball after all.

Thanks, guys.... !

Good read.

For even greater understanding, direct her to the IXMOO-FILCA-KASAM threads that we have here and by the time she's read that, she'll consider you perfectly normal! 😛

@ buzzardkid....

LOL !

I don't want her to think I'm completely normal, though - women don't like their menfolk being run-of -the-mill, boring and predictable, do they... ?!

I've been thinking --- summar / summitar / summicron for the f2 --- canon 28/ 3.5 as the 2.8 is pricey... and maybe a 12...... don't need any 35's as i have a hexar af --- just can't decide between the summar / summitar / summicron -- they all have their charms
