Over the past few years, I've carried a small camera with B&W film with me as I walk through my small city's downtown...on my way to work, running errands, etc.

At first it was just a creative exercise, but over time I noticed these odd moments and it became an ongoing personal project. In honour of the "ongoing" part, I've started a blog for these images.

Nice shots, especially the second page where the people seem less aware of your presence.

Not that it matters but, what 'small camera' are you using?

I can relate to that, last couple of years I've been shooting in the city center on my lunch breaks from work, in my business suit & tie :D

Your results are a little too portrait-y for my taste but that's not to say they're not good. This kind of street portrait can work well, like your 2nd photo with the guy smoking the pipe, I like this one. There is good interaction in this photo ie the guy and the oof city lights come together and complement each other visually. In other photos though, eg the 1st one you have the interesting characters but nothing else around to add visual interest or interaction and create a balanced composition. Bloody hard to do but a killer photo when it happens. IMO of course :)
 
Hey folks...thanks for the feedback. I very much appreciate an objective eye.

This is a small selection of works. I think you'd get a fuller picture once I have more up, which I will do in short order; I just got back from overseas so a little swamped right now.

Most of the pictures were made with an FM2 and some with an F90x. Now I'm shooting with my new (to me) M6 and 'Cron. All images are made on a 35/2 lens...this is my favorite focal length by far, the world just seems to make sense to me with this lens.

I like some of the quirkier expressions and situations you've captured in the photographs you've posted to your blog Colin, it's the little oddities and 'moments' that keep me bobbing about with my camera too.

Do you have anything inparticular that motivates you or draws you to this type of photography more than any other? I get a huge buzz from managing to catch some little cameo of life that flits into existence and out again in the blink of an eye that I struggle to cope with the more sedate nature of some other areas of photography.

Good luck with keeping the blog going, its hard work in itself but worth it, also keep going with the street photography as it's always nice to see other street shots in the gallery!
 
Very nice job, Colin! Seems to me that Brandon has a lot more street life than my own town. You're lucky... and you're good! :)
 
Great work, Colin. I'm impressed at how well you do in such a small town. It's a lot easier, in my experience, to shoot street photos in big cities so great job!

Hi Simon, thanks for the encouraging words.

I'm not sure I'm drawn to this type of photography more than others. I sure spend more time on it, but for some reason it seems to lend itself well to compiling and displaying -- be it in a blog or an exhibition of some type. It just feels right, that way.

I didn't start with any specific idea in mind. In fact, it was after wandering around this area for years that I took a few shots as a lark...then a few more, then a few more. For the most part, it started as just a way to use film (which I've had a real renaissance with the past few years) and after a while, I noticed all these funny quirky moments gathered up...there was enough of them that it motivated me to keep going and get more. And, of course, to display them somehow.

I've lived elsewhere and travelled plenty. So I think I have enough background to know that, frankly, I live in a weird little place. I've spent enough time working here that I have a knowledge and empathy, but am enough of an outsider to document it.

Overall, it's a really good creative exercise. It may never go beyond a blog few see. It may evolve, again, into something else. I don't know but it's fun to keep going. That, to me, is what photography should be -- a passion that makes your life better.

Partly personal interest -- I've always loved photography as a way to portray real day-to-day life, and found what's in front of us to always be an interesting subject.

Partly proximity -- I've walked this area for years, for my job and just going to and from work. I guess I like the smaller, usually-ignored things and people.

I should say it wasn't until I was doing this for a year or two that I realized I had something here...one just never knows, I guess.

More shots uploaded to the blog now...
