First shot. Love this lens. Paid $220 from an ebayer in Japan. Would love a Summilux, but this makes my wallet (and my wife, subject of this portrait) much happier. Wide open on my M8 in a dimly-lit corner of my kitchen.

My better half speaking from NJ with our daughter in Paris (hence the big smile; or maybe she's smiling because she doesn't know I bought another lens).😉

You are not missing out compared to the pre-asph Lux, IMO. Price and value are two different things 🙂

Its a very special lens with only 6 elements at that speed.

I'm not so good, but the OOF sure does look nice.

It's a fantastic lens.
It really makes shelling out for a summilux unnecessary IMHO.
I got great shots from mine and once tested it for resolution and it was right there with my late summicron 😱
I know the summilux and specially the ASPH must be extremely good lenses, (don't flame me...). What I mean is that any bad picture taken with this lens is MY fault and not the lense's 😉

Nice shots, robklurfield ! Your hat rack is missing a Stetson 🙂

I got great shots from mine and once tested it for resolution and it was right there with my late summicron 😱

I did the same and can not distinguish the resolution of pictures from f2-f5.6 when scanned at highest resolution on my 5000ED. Except for flare. The Canon 50/1.4 is more resistant to flare than most lenses that I know from this era, but not perfect and best used with a hood.

Cheers,

Roland.

The Canon has become the standard 50mm lens on my M2. Preferred it to the Nokton I was using, so sold the 50 Nokton and kept the 50. Excellent lens.

Roland, there are at least two Stetsons on that rack😉, including an Open Road, a favorite of a Harry Truman, LBJ, etc. A Western hat that a non-Western guy like me can wear without feeling like a total jackass or a country star wannabe. That said, I am also partial to Borsalino's. Collecting hats is FAR cheaper than collecting RF's. And, they can be quite photogenic, too.

Among my favorite Stetsons are a couple of ranger's hats; one a Boy Scout leader ranger and the other a straw State Trooper ranger with holes in the front of the crown for a badge. The top hats in this pic are just like collapsible Leica glass; the compress via some sort of underwire system to fold nearly flat (think of a Fred Astaire dance routine, where a smart flick of the wrist opens the hat to full height; not exactly how one wants to un-collapse an Elmar or Summicron, but quite debonaire nonetheless). My wife doesn't like me to wear my fez in public, nor these top hats.

Michael, I agree with you, that for my purposes and budget, this Canon obviates the need for (the very beautiful, for sure) 'lux. If I were a rich man....

Jim B, love the third-eye look. In my experience, most women have that third-eye in the back of their heads, so kudos to this gal for letting us know she can see everything we do.😉

I also love my 50 1.4 - it holds a special spot as my first RF lens and I will never sell it. I just get such nice night shots with fuji 1600. Great contrast. Underrated bokeh. Sharp. And cheap.
