My new project - FED-3a

Hi,

today I met with misok, another RFF member from Bratislava. We had a beer and a nice chat... and he gave me a bag full of parts... 😕

So this is my latest project camera (picture below).

I think I'm gonna need all your help and mental support 😉

Well I use pressure sensitive tape to secure screws, and I use a dental pick or a pair of tweasers to lube difficult to reach areas, the hypos are exposed with other than sterile water.

Blower bulb for dust particles.

... guess I'm gonna need a new set of shutter curtains... and even if not curtains then a set of straps... and who knows how many lost screws... but first I'll have to figure the shutter... oh well... and the worst thing is, that I don't know where the straps started originally (as they were already unglued when I got it)... this is gonna be so much fun... 😀 I really needed something long-term. Those standard CLAs just started to seem so easy and simple 😀

Here is a hint. Most of the time one of the straps starts just to one side of the hole in the roller on the drum. That is if there is one. I have yet to discover one take up drum that did not have a hole on one of the rollers the straps attach to. With all your experience, this should only take a couple of extra days.

Can you post pics of each step so we can follow along? We might be able to get a good repair sticky out of your endeavors and more experienced members can guide us all, even if it takes awhile.

There was a sketch on Jim Blaczik's now defunct site that showed how to find the starting point for unglued shutter curtains. It is a little cryptic but helped me on my first Fed overhaul. I'll see if I can find a copy and post it here. Maybe someone else here has it on their hard drive.

My skills are such that if I took it apart I can guarantee putting it back together. Putting together something I never took apart is an entirely different proposition! All I can say is good luck!

I have had my 3a to a fair stage of disassembly, however, and it's pretty similar to other FSUs so I don't think you'll have major headaches. That's if it's all there, of course!

Brave boy, at least it'll keep you out of trouble for a while...

Wouldn't happen to have the long spring out of the bottom of one of those 4Ks would you? I have one parts 4K but that spring is clearly missing a piece. I planned to put it in my '62 Z-4, along with the cam, in order to improve slow-speed repeatability. Finding it damaged put paid to that idea! The 4K has a more advanced cocking lock and I find the 4 can sometimes be erratic at 1/15, so I had the idea to "upgrade" it to 4K standard...

The FED-3 is in Maizenberg, if that helps (p. 217-220 in the English version). It says all sorts of reassuring things there, such as "When doing complete camera disassembly, do not remove the base 1" 🙂 But it seems pretty close to the FED-2.

To put it together is not the problem that scares me, it's the shutter curtains replacement and glueing the straps... I might end up disassebling and reassembling it many times until i find the correct position... If the shutter curtains and straps were good it would be much easier... and I guess i could put it together in a day, but the straps are unglued and one strap is starting to tear in the middle...

I can't really point it out, but it is the long metal piece on the bottom of the shutter crate. In the picture above it is attached with the two screws and anchored to the shutter cam. If so, I believe that I have a couple laying around

A few months ago I replaced shutter curtains on a Fed-2. Following Maizenberg. I think technically it resembles the 3a quite closely.
When your curtains and/or ribbons are already loose, this is only nasty at the big drum side.
Maybe you can retrieve the original position by carefully observing the old glue traces? Or perhaps scratched marks made by the guy who disassembled your camera? Then you at least should have an indication.

Anyhow: since in my case new ribbons/curtains never had exactly the same length as the old ones, part of my procedure always was very detailed comparing and metering, before glueing everything to the drums. And even then I had to reglue one or more parts repeatedly for optimal results.
Just part of the tantalizing puzzle - don't hurry ...

Oh yes, one other hint: When I changed curtains for the first time, on my Z1, I discovered accidentally, only after reassembling everything, that the new curtains which I bought from a FSU dealer were completely porous! The rubber coating was way too thin to keep light out. :bang: (What about quality control?)
I immediately got new ones from the seller, but had to go through the complete operation another time. Since then, I always check the light-tightness of my new curtains against a bright halogen lamp before using them.

TV, Yes the release spring. That's not a 4K though, and it needs to be complete. Here is the equivalent part on a 4K - the lower of the springs in this picture. The little tang sitting over the silver cam is broken off on the parts camera, so I can't use it. This cam and tang are responsible for holding the cocked shutter in *exactly* the same place each time and the Z-4s (early ones anyway) don't have it, hence the erratic 1/15th. I have the cam from the parts body, it's swappable onto the 4, I've already checked that.

Yeah, that is a Z6, but I just wanted to make sure we were on the same page. I am pretty sure that I have a couple of them kicking around the parts bin. I will double check when I get home tonight to see how many I have. I will take a picture so that you can be sure it will work. Then if it does, you can PM me your address.

I had to do this as well on my Fed 1g. I used ordinary rubber cement for the trial gluings as it is easy to remove. Patch up your old set for experimentation purposes, but by all means, get a new set for the final assembly.

I am still looking for the Blaczik diagram and as I am under orders to clean up the computer room today, I should be able to post it soon.
