Okay - winter, few available hours of light outside when I can actually use them

Why not use a flash?
I ordered a cable (PC sync ), dug out my flash and here goes

The flash is an SB-800, set to TTL ( supposedly uses the flash to measure correct exposure) set the ISO, lens , aperture on the flash

Attach cable, cover hot shoe contacts on flash with paper, slide flash into shoe (tight fit) hold cable tight into camera ( threaded cable end)
Set shutter to 1/60

Bam! It flashed when I pressed the shutter
Can't wait to see if the exposure is near correct

Also need to RTFM again to see if I can set the 1/60 speed on the flash

Anyone ever they this?

I do that with an SB-28 on a number of different older film cameras (M3, A1, Rolleiflex), although I don't use TTL, I use the Auto setting. Works fine.

Which cable did you order? I have a ton of flashes that have been gifted, most nikon sb-26 and I have no idea what cable I need.

Also, that setup looks great. Makes me miss my s3

I tried AUTO mode "A" on the flash, it seems to flash at lower power for the test shots I was doing (as opposed to TTL mode)
I'm pretty sure this is the correct mode - not TTL

I set the lens (SB-800 has a zoom head) , aperture, ISO

one thing I forgot - the SP has 4 shutter flash sync modes - I think it has to do with the initial
delay and duration of the flash (remember that single use bulbs and electronic flash was supported)

I will now try another test after setting to "FX" which should be good for 1/60 or 1/30 sec. shutter

Old cameras work fine with modern flashes (just the same as modern cameras): auto or manual. Learn (learn is a big word here) how to use your flash and you will be able to improve situations that call for fill or low light enhancement. My Balda has flash synch at all speeds but I've used even out door flash with slow speed film and low synch speeds.

The Balda isn't even X synched but you can still use it.

There is no TTL circuit for the flash to find so it is firing at full power. In Auto mode the sensor in the flash is limiting the light output. Work with it Auto or Manual mode and have fun. Use a roll for dedicated test at various apertures, 1/60th is fine for your shutter speed.
