Lynn . I have reduced the header and I think it works much better now. I think if I go down the border route then a thin black or grey would work, not so keen on the drop shadow a bit too fussy as you say.

Good luck with your site. Mine has involved alot of trial and error and a surprising amount of time to get this far but from the comments so far worth the effort.

Thanks Shane its good to get some feedback as its been a bit of journey in isolation so far.
I will look up "the Elements of Style' thanks for the tip
