I knew I had this camera. It was my step-brother's. His father was a Major in Army intelligence and with the first U.S. unit to enter occupied Berlin. My step-mother (this my father's second wife) told me the Major had gotten the camera from his Russian counter-part in Berlin. Step-brother had no interest photography and gave it me. I never thought about the "Russian" camera when I was taking Russian. I never translated the markings.

Well today was digging in my desk draw I pulled it out. In about 1968, it stopped working and the Dallas Leica techs wouldn't touch it.

I know a bit now about Russian Leica copies and looking saw it was a FED in cyrillic.
Well I did a little playing with an online Russian alphabet and FED serial numbers.I have:

An NKVD FED 1b made in 1937.

Now, I want to get it restored and back taking pictures.
I'm going to see if Sherry K. will CLA the lens. Still looking for a FED restorer.

Nice re-find of snazzy camera. There's a couple techs that specialize in FSU cameras.
The two that come to mind are Eddy Smolov and Oleg Khalyavin. I've spoken with Eddy before but have not sent a camera for him to repair yet. I've recently ordered a camera from Oleg, just waiting for it to arrive.

Others wil have some insight and experience with different techs out there.

Send it to Yuri at Fedka.com. He's based in New York, runs a web shop that allows for buying a camera CLA and a Lens CLA and a shutter overhaul easily, with paying by credit card or PayPal. Return shipping included, turn around approx 3 weeks.

He had one of his technicians perform a shutter overhaul, CLA and lens CLA/alignment on my 1940 FED S and FED 50mm 2.0 lens, they came back smooth as butter after three weeks.

Sherry will probably not do non-Leica lenses, if she does, the turn around will be longer, she might be more expensive (Yuri charges USD 39.00!)

Yuri gets the business. A newpaper friend who used to dabble in Russian cameras has also recommend Yuri. Will try to get it off tomorrow when I have into the UPS place and send some things to Sherry K. I'll love to have it back working.. ;)

It's only a machine, John, never mind its relative rarity and the historical significance of the letters "NKVD". But if it gives decent results and pleases you... well, that's what hobbies are all about.
