Let's jump right into how I came to this epiphany:
I started out doing street photography with a Digital Rebel XT. I had no complaints about it, except that it had a tiny viewfinder which disconnected me from my subjects. This is perhaps the biggest disadvantage I see with SLRs vs. RFs for street photography. Size and weight aren't really an issue...the XT is lighter than most RFs, and it's fairly diminutive.
So, I fell in love with RFs. Started out with an M4-P, then got tired of shooting film. Could never get used to the hassles coming from digital. Just wanted to capture moments. So I sold that.
Recently, I bought an RD-1. Very happy with it, but the only lens I own is a 40 Nokton. 60mm equiv. is not a good focal length for street work. And since I want to shoot wider than 40mm equiv. (the widest I can go on the 1:1 VF), I decided I should get a 25mm (which is around 37mm equiv.), and put a 35mm external VF on the hotshoe.
Which leads me to my epiphany. At that point, why not just put a 35mm external VF on the hotshoe of my XT, and slap a 24/2.8 EF on it? With that, I can't see any more significant advantages the R-D1 can offer me over my $300 DSLR. Focus isn't a problem at 24mm f/8; I can scale/zone focus. With the external VF, no more blackout either. Noise is not an issue for me. Not to mention my Rebel can knock off shots at light speed without me having to wind anything. And it's lighter than my R-D1.
So, did I just make a $1500 mistake? Or am I overlooking something?
