My ongoing project Native: New York was featured on the Leica Blog recently...

Nice pics but I find the term "Native" to be an insult to all those who died when the continent was invaded by the Europeans. The true Natives of the New York area are not those who now live there.

As a person of color as well as the decedent of Natives of the Caribbean I find your comment both self centered and off base. I can respect the ancestral native population of the area and at the same time say that New York is part of me and I of it. To say otherwise is to deny myself and where I come from.

Amazing how people on this site can take anything and make it about themselves!

Ansel, the term Native when referring to those who dwell in NYC may seem odd or insulting to you, but you do not know the meaning. It does not mean what you think it does, so let's just leave it at that.

Photo #2 is interesting. The sign says to report suspicious activity. Looks like the girl may be a bit suspicious of you? 🙂

Good series.

Very good work Damaso. New York has always been a symbol of freeedom for the rest of the US. You captured it well the way only a native New YORker, (wish I could say it like Helen) only can.😉
