Need a lens for my Leica IIIb

w3rk5: Also a great picture! A bit soft but for being at wide open throttle it's sharp! What film did you use? Colors, if you haven't balanced them, looks neutral and good. Maybe I'll buy the whole bunch of them...

Another Jupiter-3 colour photo. Not sure what the aperture used was, but it was definitely not at f/1,5. J-3 was on a Leica M3. Film was Ferrania ISO 100 colour negative film (a.k.a. "Imation")

I really like my J8 (CLA by Kim Coxon). Also - and to my great surprise - my Elmar 50mm 3.5 is really pretty sharp when stopped down; it was recently CLA by DAG. It is very different from the "soft," that is almost to say hazy, lens I remember using years ago (I confess, it has been in my closet for a long time.)

Gotta have an Elmar! The last shots were really great! Even before your CLA!!! Actually I just realized that I already have an old Jupiter 8 that came with my Kiev4a. It's in steel and has fixed aperture steps, a good quality lens for shure. Must try it, but as I also have a Sonnar 1,5 so I assumed it was redundant. But M39 is M39.
Raid: It will take this evening and a dozen cups of coffe to figure out which one that is the "best". Actually, much depends on personal taste. A super contrasty lens is not always the best. Thanks for the job. I miss two lenses though, I-22 and I-50. I have gone through some revaluation concerning the collapsible lenses. They ARE cute 🙂
BTW: are all those retractable lenses coupled?

Looking at test pictures for a while and Summicrons, however a little cold, are in their own class. She's jumping out of the pics! But Canons, especially the 1,8, are good, 1,2 is rather blueish. Surprisingly strong is the I-61LD! Nikon, Jupiters and Sonnar are so so. Elmar is a disappointment. So where is that 35mm shoot-out 😉

The shootout was in the front-yard of our home with my older daughter volunteering the modeling in return for some cookies.

Yes, the I-61L did very well. It is an inexpensive lens that I never had to adjust. It came with my FED 5C camera. The Elmar was used directly after buying it. I never had it inspected for a CLA or even a cleaning job. The Canon 50/1.8 is a great lens without a doubt. The J-3 is not bad at all. Some found it to be the best in my test.

I noticed what you are talking about but it is the same on the wall and I feel it is depth of field related?

Ok, thanks for all input! Yesterday, in a moment of bliss or stupidity, I bought three FSU lenses for the astronomical sum of 45USD, shipping inclusive. One I-10, think it's coated and looks great (thanks for the tip ZorkiKat!), one rigid chrome I-50 and one I-61 LD 🙂
However I will not rest my case... this obsession is permanent 😀
How I know? I just passed a photo store on my way home from work and I saw a used Voigtländer Snapshot 25/4 with a matching finder. How can I possibly sleep tonight?

Lol imagine that, a nikon AF 50 1.8 is about a $100. at a used store. You got three great lenses for less than half that. 🙂

You may really like the rigid I-50. It is a tad homely, but mine is crisp, sharp and contrasty. Plus 3.5 is generally good enough outside in daylight.

I just bought a J-9. Next up is a J-3, I have to have a I-61LD.

Ok, received the rigid Industar-50 and it does not, I repeat, does not work with the Leica IIIb rangefinder coupling! The cam on the Leica is not compatible with this lens. Too bad, it's little and feels ok... FSU wise, I have the Jupiter-12 and it does work.

Ouch. Rather surprising actually. You might consider the collapsible I.50. Mine works great on my Leica.III. Cheers ~

Ok, thanks! I'm waiting for the I-61 and the collapsible 1-22 that I bought too, maybe they are ok. No biggie, at least one good thing with cheap lenses 🙂

Got a 1938 Leica IIIb with an uncoated 2/50 collapsible Summar. This lens is pretty cool for weird effects with color films and gives a very nice old-school atmosphere to bw. But I want to try something sharper now and looking for the best russian normal lense to shoot both color and bw. I have a J12 fitted to it sometimes but I don't really like the color it gives, green/yellowish tones, not at all correct. Great for bw though. I had a Fed2 and a Fed3 with Industar 61 lenses but never tried them on my Leica, now there gone. So neutral color, sharp, at least 2,8 aperture. Chrome model preferable. Thanks!

Try using a light yellow filter with the Summar, it may get rid of the yellow cast on the photos. You can also get coated filters which will help eliminate/reduce flair. Maybe a coated yellow filter? You might have to try different strengths of yellow.

Also I-61LD come in a choice of black, chrome, and what they call Panda, alternate stripes of chrome and black.

Newest latest: developed two rolls with using Snapshot Skopar 25/4 and I-50, J-12 and those taken with the I-50 were totally wasted! Extremely blurry independent of focal range!?!?!

Got the I-61L/D and the Fed (I-10) today 🙂 It appears that they are working fine with the Leica. Out to shoot some rolls now!
