need advice. -home processing or lab?

good day everyone!
just another nub question from smile. i read some reviews and bought Fuji Reala 100, FUJI Pro 160S and some BW film - ILFORD HP5 Plus. Before i had absolutely no problems shooting ilford xp and processing it in the local lab, but few days ago i shoot ILFORD HP5 and sent it to the lab to process, they spoiled it, just gave me back blank tape =( there were gonna be some nice shots, some masterpieces. to say i was dissapointed is to say nothing, so i put my leica back to closet and shoot with machine-gun (5dmk2) for some time. my question is - how can i determine what type of film can be developed in the drug store and what type is for home play only?

Find a new lab. Any good and knowledgable lab knows the difference between C-41, E-6 and traditional B&W processing.

I recommend you to use labs for E6 and C-41, and develop B&W at home... The reason is labs use standard times for color films, but they can do lots of bad things to your B&W film...

Gumby, thx for advice. there are just two labs and the second one even worse. unfortunately they both do not process E-6. so i need to know for shure what colour and BW negs are fine for C-41. are there any marks on film boxes?

Kind of depends where you live I guess. For example, here in SF, there are numerous labs that know what they're doing with all sorts of B&W film, including pushing/pulling, etc. Expensive, but knowledgeable.

Two B&W films are made for C-41 processing Ilford XP2 and Kodak BWCN. Gumby is right, your photo guy processed traditional B&W (HP5) in C-41 and wiped the emulsion off. It will say process C-41 on the film cassette if its C-41 film.

All films that should be C-41 developed, come in a box where you can read C-41. Those are mostly color negative films, and a couple of chromogenic B&W films by Ilford and Kodak...

Home-processing is the only option IF there are no labs left to do the job. Or if the ones left do the job badly. I process all the films I use- standard BW, colour C41, and even occasionally E6 'chrome'/slide films.

For scanning 35mm: C41, colour or mno.

For wet printing and large formats, mono only: conventional film

Preferably home processed in all cases.

Datasheets and boxes are fine and dandy and good things to have, but IIRC all 35mm film cassettes state the proper processing right on them. Why the kids at the drugstore don't know this is something that leaves me continually amazed.
