Need Good Lab for C-41 + Scans

So are all the scans from Precision like this? Blacks noisy? This is really disconcerting.

Any other E-6 samples? Perhaps some that came out alright?

It's completely sporadic. That's the cruel part about scanning in auto. Sometimes the scans are spot on and perfect, but I'm not paying for sometimes.

I'm guessing Nate has sent a lot more film to Precision than I have, but for what it's worth, everything I sent in came back fine.

Another happy NCPS customer, fast turnaround, great scans.
Been using them for more than a year, but I recently started developing B&W and received my brand new scanner today!!
I will still use them for C41 & E6.

Probably not, I only sent them about 15-20 rolls of 120/220 over the last 3 months or something like that. I got very inconsistent results, from very good scans to what I posted in the thread. I emailed the photolab two or three times with questions, comments and complaints, but never once did I get a reply.

I can recommend Holland Photo (http://www.hollandphoto.com/html/) also in Austin and they do mailorder. However, the scans are only 6MBs and about $20 per roll to develop and scan. I've been using them for over a year now and they do top notch work, every time.

I used Precision Camera for years and their film processing and printing was excellent in the days of film; I have many optical prints from the early 2000's that were gorgeously printed.

However, with digital scans, I kept getting inconsistent results; most of the problems had to do with color casts that were not easily fixed in Photoshop. Sometimes there'd be different casts in the same scan. After some investigation, I now believe the problem to be with the developing as I find film developed by PC very hard to scan with my Nikon CS9000. On the other hand, the same film shot with the same camera and developed by Holland Photo scans beautifully.

Precision Camera is a great shop. Their product selection and customer service is excellent. Salespeople are very helpful and if I ever had a problem, other than the film scanning above, they always made it right. But there's something wrong with their film processing.

Hmm. Yeah they weren't too great with email in my experience. I had to call to get a response.

Was that light spot in the bottom center (near the guys legs) of your example frame on the neg too?

How's the M9? I need to sell out before I can get one of those. I still like film, but if I had $7k laying around, I might be tempted.

With Precision, are you guys noticing this mainly with medium format?
Seems like all aforementioned problems are with 120/220.

Perhaps the fault of the flatbed operator?

Any problems w/ 35mm specifically (which is all I shoot)?

No, the slide is very contrasty as you would expect from E100VS. The stupid scanner tried to pull detail out of the shadows and just went nuts.

I have been using NCPS for a couple of years. They do a very nice job with both developing and scans. I got some scans back a couple of weeks ago and I was not really happy about them so I emailed them about it. In about 30 minutes my phone rang and it was Richard Shute, the owner of NCPS, and he had my scans up on his computer and we talked about them and as it turned out I was viewing the scans on a different computer and they looked very different. I apologized for my own error. He told me to just call him if I have a problem instead of emailing. I was really surprised and delighted with their concern and the fact that they called me so quickly. That's really excellent service. Jim
