I'm entering a juried art show next week and I need help narrowing down my options to 4 images that I'll submit. This is a general arts show that will contain painting, sculpture, photography and any other kind of art people feal like entering. There's no theme for the show and no particular bias will be given for subject matter.

If you have a chance please take a look at the flickr set below of ten or so possible choices and let me know which 1,2,3 or 4 images you like the most.

I like Urban Aesthetics @ Zaphods, Post No Bills, Imposing, & In The Market. No bias toward B&W. Have fun at the show.

Having no idea about the judging, so going only by my own immediate reactions:

1. Urban Aesthetics @ Zaphods (#1)
2. Forgotten Whisky Jug (#8)
3. Transit Tunnel (#7)
4. Dandilion Macros (#5)

don't mix color with black and white, don't mix people with still life. I have been on a lot of juries; juries look for a consistent approach / unified vision.

also, you might consider submitting fewer than 4 if the rules allow, in order to have more consistency.

What Pablito said.

Powerful presentations come from consistency and theme, or it becomes a mismash as we usually see in amateur foto exhibitions.

I would choose 3, 5, 6 and 10 because of the repeating patterns. I think these combine to provide the consistency Pablito suggests IF they are all either in color or black & white. If it were up to me , I would not mix color and b&w.

Best wishes on the show!

Perhaps, but actual results in the photo competitions I've bothered to look at recently seem to come from just how badly over-processed the "photograph" is. The less it looks like an actual photograph, the more likely it is to take out the prize - as near as I can tell.

Perhaps I've been looking in the wrong places, but I haven't much liked what I have seen in the places I've looked.

Art, none of the pics are, sorry. Good some are; I prefer the jug by the window with the spider webs, B+W. Sorry I do not remember its number.

Nowhere does it say you need to have one topic/consistent portefolio for the four.

So a bit of diversity will not hurt. And which they select to show is another vagary.

But art none of them is ...

I'm honestly curious what your definition of art is. I can take constructive criticism... I can even accept if someone just plain dislikes my work... fair enough. But if you're going to make a blanket statement like that I'd really like to know what your reasoning is. What makes a shot art or not art?

From the Random House Dictionary:
1. the quality, production, or expression, according to aesthetic principles, of what is beautiful, appealing, or of more than ordinary significance.

We are each entitled to our opinion as to what is beautiful, appealing and significant. That, as they say, is what makes horse races .... and art shows.

Good luck with your submissions.

Your black and white images, appeal to me more than your color work. If I were to choose 4; I would suggest a few from your black and white work:

1) Forgotten Whiskey
2) Dandilion Macro
3) Imposing
4) Urban Aesthetics

Good luck!
