Need help selecting photos for a show

The Black Sand Beach and the blue and white jellyfish would be my choices. Both simple graphic images which would look good on the wall.

Thanks. Again, I think that the beach and the jellyfish are a natural pair. Not sure anybody would buy them as a pair, but they might work well for a themed room. Hmm...

Hmmm, for Me as a 'Buyer'
I would want the beautiful b&w austere Lighthouse
And the ever so colourful psychedelic flying thru Space Mushroom

Congrats & Best of Luck !

Thanks Helen!

I like the lighthouse quite a bit too. :)

I envision the space mushroom in a young boy's bedroom. I would have loved it to go with my space themed room :D

To my eye the black sand beach and the jellyfish were the ones, they'll compliment each other side by side.
The black sand beach is a great shot.

The B&W sea scape was nice too, possibly a little esoteric as a photographer I like it– though it depends on the audience more...

Thank you!

The audience I think may be one of the principle questions that I need to ponder.

What Chris101 says, and I'd include the grasshopper too.

Question isn't so much 'what is safe', or 'what will sell', but rather 'what do you want to present your photography with'?

A quote (on being a writer, but still) comes to mind: It's better to write for yourself and have no audience, than to write for your audience and lose yourself.

If those photographs arent't meant to pay bills, I'd chose the ones I myself would like. And if they were going to pay bills, I'd probably still do that!

That is quite a good quote.

These are not sales to pay bills. I like your approach -- I need to consider what do I want to say about myself more than 'what do I think people are most likely to buy'. After all, if nobody buys the prints, then I can just put them up on my wall.

I think I have settled on the black sand beach and one of the jellyfish (probably the black and white one). Although, the black and white landscape with the cloud is still calling to me.

Based upon the input in this thread, maybe I should try a print sale on the rff classifieds. :) If there is interest among any of you in purchasing prints, just let me know and I will put up a classified ad.

Thanks again.

Echoing others, black sand beach is one I would be happy to have hanging on my wall. My second choice would be the b&w landscape as well but that's just my taste.

My guess: if it's a matter of what will sell, to an entirely generic audience, your girlfriend is right.

Me, personally, I like the B&W landscape-with-cloud best, then think "you've got some other good photos there". I'm not sure I'd like to confine myself to just two (though I know that isn't what you were asking). If forced, I'd go with the lighthouse as #2.

With Helen on the Lighthouse.
In fact the lighthouse is the only one that stopped me on my tracks.

The B&W jellyfish is a distant-second.

If I were entering a contest with these pictures, well first I'd be very proud and confident, and second I would choose these:

and

Those are exactly the two I was thinking.
All the pictures are very good, but those two stood out to me.
The black and white grasshopper would be my 3rd choice.

The lighthouse is nice, but compared with the others, it looks just a little bit "ordinary".

I completely agree. How much money can you make all in all by selling a few copies of stock-ish images (like the squirrel or the lighthouse)? That won't make you rich, though I do understand it would be a satisfaction. But wouldn't it be an even greater one to display proudly two images that you feel represent your photography best, at the risk of not selling anything? Staying faithful to your vision and style in a public event may open more doors than it closes.

That being said, if I had to pick two, either to display together or to hang on my wall, that would be the blue-toned beach and the blue jellyfish. The latter is truly enchanting to me, with the dust in the water making it resemble and astronomy photograph.

The lighthouse. Unless you are a purist I would clone at least the upper support wire. Maybe the others as well.

Good luck with the show David!

I mean no offence, but I really feel it's a mistake to ask others about this. Choose what you think best represents your intentions and aspirations as a photographer.
